“I Captain an interstellar vessel comprised of billions of parts and a thousand people. Pretty sure I can tell you when a light turns green.” and he chuckled. He watched the display closely and tried to follow along.

A smirk tugged at the corner of Faye’s mouth as she began to input some commands. “Okay, so we have that part on…” she said, murmuring to herself as things began to light up on Alex’s screen. She typed quickly some more and nodded. “Okay, should be any time now,” she said glancing at him briefly, but returning her attention to her screen and the scrolling code.

Cochrane watched and then the lights went green. “Green light.” he said and then glanced at her. “Now what?”

“Good, good,” Faye said distantly as she keyed in some more commands. While she could just have the computer do the tasks she was asking, it was actually easier to react if she could watch the processes in real time rather than wait for the results. “Okay, so now I want you to enter in a start command and when you get another all clear, start the next one. Everything is set up is a prearranged sequence, so you can’t mess it up.” She tossed a grin his way. “So now worries about blowing up your own ship.”

Cochrane chuckled and then watched for a moment. After a minute or so, his brow furrowed and he asked “What does ‘Cascade Failure of Central Processing Matrix’ mean?” in a slightly apprehensive fashion. In his mind, he was laughing. There was no error, but that wouldn’t be any fun, now would it…
