Alex went to the replicator and retrieved the needed items, then opened the wine. As he did, he glanced at Faye. “So… how are you doing, Faye? With everything?” he asked. There was a lot going on, and the two of them hadnt spoken alone in quite some time.

Faye paused mid-slice and looked over her shoulder at him. She considered the question and shrugged. “Okay, I guess. You’ll be glad to know that the repairs to the jefferies tube were done in record time and the final hardware installation is all done.” She continued slicing thin strips of the sweet pepper. “I’m still running some simulations, but should be ready to bring everything online in 36 hours.” That wasn’t what he had asked, and she knew it. Still, she figured she’d get the ‘work’ out of the way while there was an appropriate moment.

His head cocked to the side. “Excellent. Now answer the question I asked you.” he said with a hint of gruffness to his voice.

“Since you asked so nicely,” she said dryly and went back to slicing her peppers.
How was she, really? Better than she expected under the circumstances actually and that was the slightly terrifying part. “I’m good, actually. Surprisingly. I don’t know. I like it here and I’m getting to know people. This dinner is a good example of something I’d never have been able to even contemplate a few years ago. But… it feels perilously close like it’ll all fall apart once people learn who I’m with. People get… skittish around Intelligence, even if I’m about the least stereotypical officer to ever agree to be amongst its ranks. And once they learn that, they’ll be suspicious of me, keep their distance. Not the worst idea for them, I suppose.” She looked over her shoulder briefly and “After all, I am a rather prickly person at the best of times.” He told her to be a spy, play the part, to save her own ass as well as cover others, and well, so far it hadn’t come back to haunt her. But it was only a matter of time, wasn’t it? But she was determined to enjoy this unusual period of calmness in her life as long as she could.
