On behalf of the United Federation of Planets and the crew of the Manhattan, I thank you for your warm welcome. We will be assuming standard orbit and coming down in short order. I am briefing my Senior Officers on the proposed projects your government has asked for assistance with, and we will be happy to discuss the particulars once we are planet side. Jawn Biehl smiled, his teeth a light violet hue. =^= Captain, I am pleased to meet you at last. Your invitation of help has been met with considerable animation among my counselling committee. While others have offered to help none have done so with the simple offer without recompense. Our offices are not far. Transport will be awaiting you. They will take you to the Ministry. Is there anything specific you require - dietary restrictions, allergies and the like? =^=

Looking at the man’s skin, Jasmine immediately began to theorize why the man looked so purple and appeared so humanoid. It was more than a casual interest thought. In humans, skin that color had one diagnosis: Argyria. This was caused by the element silver and being exposed to excessive amounts to it. Typically it was found in people that worked silver mines where they inhaled the dust, factories where they processed it, or by those that ate it. Since silver was not processed by the body or known to be found naturally in extreme levels in food, only people suffering from PICA got it from ingestion. There was no treatment to remove the color from the skin that worked one hundred percent. All of this could just be a coincidence. They were an alien species and the length of time the crew were going to be down there should not cause any real effects but she would ask science to run a scan looking to make sure there wasn’t any insane amount to silver deposits on the surface which could turn the crew into Violet Beauregarde’s.

Cochrane shook his head slightly and said =/\= No, sir. But we do have a few questions before we depart the Manhattan, if you have the time? =/\= and he tapped a command into the tabletop interface that sent a message to all attendees that now was the time to clarify any questions.

This is your first visit to Graven and I imagine you have many. =^= He paused and looked down at his desk which as far as they could tell was bare in that area but for some sheafs of paper and a pen/stylus. =^= I cannot imagine that any given … world is the same. Of the various parties I have met with in the few years of my tenure here everyone is vastly different. =^=

=^= Minister, I am Warrant Officer Darach. I’ll be coordinating the transfer of our people and appropriate materials as needed to the surface. I’ve been reviewing the documentation that was sent to us, but is there anything else that we should be aware of before transporting down? =^=

=^= Ah, that is a common question. The Visitor Centre is located along the wharves and has a space there for vessels to land. Cargo can be loaded and off loaded there onto ships. For those with matter transports there are cargo pads both near the VC and the wharves. At the wharves there are vehicles and rail lines if need be. There is also accommodation at the VC for your stay. =^=

Jawn glanced down and seemed to scan a sheet on his desk. That didn’t appear to have been something front and center. =^= When people visit Graven they do so on their own cultural frameworks. We do not stifle that in the name of any personal propriety bias that we may have. The laws governing the world are strict and visitors crossing such are simply asked to leave. If your uniforms and gear are what you are comfortable in then by all means be comfortable. =^=

Walker looked over at Logan and just raised an eyebrow. What was the Lieutenant doing? If anything it seemed like he was trying to undermine the Captain so he could take a heavily armed security team to the surface. Giving up, Walker just shook his head. He was starting to feel sorry for him, for whatever happened in his life to make him that paranoid.

Naim let a short moment pass after Jawn had finished speaking to make sure she wasn’t going to interrupt anyone. She then said with a polite smile, “Good day Sir. I’m Lieutenant Kiama Naim, the Chief Science Officer. I’ve been told that you need assistance with improving the crop yield on some of your larger agri-farms. With regard to that I’m wondering if you could give me more information about the types of crop, your stand on genetic engineering and the type of equipment used on your world for farming? Knowing all of that before hand would help me and my department to prepare better and help you in the best way possible. We want to be respectful of your culture and your way of living.” The often impulsive and and emotional Betazoid was showing a side of her that not many people on the Manhattan had seen yet. There was a calmness and unintrusive self-assurance about her and something one might call a non-anxious presence.

=^= Be welcome to Graven Lieutenant. The assistance comes with one field in particular. It is newly opened and has been giving us trouble. The climate and conditions suggest grains to be farmed like with surrounding agro regions, however it has not borne fruit. Soil samplings do not render anything that we can point to for the cause. We rely on farm equipment that is physically intensive for cultivation and harvesting – tracked machinery. We have considerably genetically engineered crops – that has been pursued for millennia. =^= He smiled – a kind, grandfather like smile. =^= I am touched by your consideration for us. Thank you. =^=

“You are welcome, Sir,” Naim replied with a warm smile and without missing a beat she continued, “Would it be possible that we get access to all that data? Both for that field in particular and the surrounding regions?” She then looked briefly down on her PaDD, trying to think of anything else that might be important to ask right away. As she looked up again, she added, “And any other data you have on parasites, diseases and anything else we should know about the crops and that region of your planet?”

Max had been busy scanning the files he had received for the upgrades and repairs to one of the Geothermal power plants on the planet. The CO was right, with their standard equipment the work would only have taken a few short days but even though their tech wasn’t illegal on the planet, it had to stay with them. That meant that no upgrades they carried out could utilizes their tech or need their tech to repair or replace once they had left, meaning that everything had to be redesigned to work with the tech they used themselves in mind. That was the kicker.

“I’m going to need more information on the types of equipment we have to work with on Graven,” Max added after Naim had spoken. “The work itself isn’t an issue, and will progress quickly but what we use has to remain applicable top Graven’s capability to repair and replace, that’s going to take some time to redesign.”

=^= We can happily supply you with that information. Our .. problem in this case is similar to the question of our agro production. We have a mystery. We have been utilizing this facility for a great number of years. Recently it has been expanded to include that of more ancient wells that had been long closed. That has been quite successful in such re-utilization of past resources. However, the pipes and tubing we have been using has begun to corrode at an alarming rate and the facility is close to becoming a danger. Replacing the piping has resulted in parts of the facility closing for long periods of time and the corrosion has continued. Our sensing methods have not detected anything to cause that. Both may be related as geographically the agro and geothermal areas are not far apart. =^=

“That is possible,” Max agreed, “and with our gear on hand with the Away Teams we could make further and deeper scans when needed and see if anything shows up for us. If we find anything, we can work on a way to find a solution using Gravens available technology.”

=/\= Minister, would we be permitted to make use of our labs here on the Manhattan for assistance with analyzing soil and water samples from Graven? None of us want to step on any of your traditions or beliefs. We simply have integrated such technology into our protocols, and it may serve to expedite the process of analyzation if we were allowed to do so. =/\= Looking at the assembled officers, he said “I hope that made sense. Science is not my strong point.” in low voice so as not to be heard over the comms.

“Works for me,” Max muttered, but his mind was working on why corrosion would be forming without clear atmospheric or geological causes, issues in manufacture came immediately to mind.

Our Engineering, Security, and Science teams will travel via shuttle to the Visitors Center. We should be arriving within the hour, if that is acceptable to you and your people? =/\= Cochrane looked at Darach and said “Chief, begin the preparations for all sections departure. You will have the conn while we are planet-side.”

While still listening to everything that was happening around her, Naim was already busy compiling a list of all the equipment that they would most likely need on the planet and also one all the tasks that needed to be done both before departure and upon arrival on the planet.

Logan brightened up a bit. Maybe this mission wouldn’t be so bad, after all.

“Aye Captain. We should be able to start shuttle runs within about 30 minutes of arriving. If each department can get me their requirements and priorities, I will get a timeline going.”

Not exactly the most glamorous job, but it was something that needed to be done. It seemed pretty straight forward, so hopefully everything went smoothly.
