“Now that the fun part is done, let’s get down to business.” and he pulled up the display of Graven from his PaDD. Listed were five projects: Repair and upgrade of a geothermal power plant, training of medical staff to deal with outside contagions brought to Graven by off-worlders, assistance in improving crop yields of some of their larger agri-farms, assessment and training of police and emergency response services, and lastly establishment of a Federation Embassy in their capital city’s diplomatic quarter.

Cochrane looked at the staff and said “Now. Doing all of this would normally take us a few days. But with the limitation of technology, I want an estimated time to completion from each department. The plans and logistical requirements for each project have been sent to each Department Head. Review now and let me know your thoughts. And no, I won’t hold you to those preliminary estimates. I know we won’t get an accurate timeline until we are on the ground.” As he finished speaking, each PaDD chirped in acknowledgement the files had been received.

Cochrane, CO

“From a medical standpoint, it depends on the tech they want to embrace. Tricorders tell you a lot of info fast when someone is sick. If they want to go the old routes the incubation period on some diseases radically changes the way you detect and contain an outbreak. Once I am up to specs on the lab and procedures they use, it will be a few days to develop a manual for the physical routine in screening off worlders. Then a week maybe putting the new procedure in place,” Jasmine suggested. “Rough estimate is seven to ten days,” she shrugged.

Wynter CMO

“Where would you like me to lend my expertise on this project Captain?” Walker had a few ideas, but he was curious to see what the Captain had in mind.

WO Darach - COO

“Mr. Darach, I’d like you act as liaison between departments. Logistics of material and personnel will be hard enough as it is, I’d like you to make sure everyone has what they need and are where they are supposed to be.”

“Understood Captain.”

While the others were talking about time estimates and the like, Naim pulled the PaDD closer to her and started to glance through the personell files of everyone in her department; hoping that there would be someone with more expertise in farming than herself. After all, while she was a biologist, her major was in neuroscience and from the Academy she had two minors: one in exobiology and socio-cultural anthropology. And neither of those felt like they would be very helpful for helping with farming. While scrolling through the files, a thought crossed her mind: after running into Lieutenant Calloway the other day, she’d had a look at her public Starfleet file. Without paying attention to whether or not the conversations around her had been finished, she asked, “I know Lieutenant Calloway isn’t actually a member of my department, but I have a feeling her experiences and skill sets will be helpful for my departments part of this mission. Can I ask her for her help or will she be needed elsewhere. Also, before I can give a time estimate that is based on facts and not mere guesswork, I’ll need more information.”

Lt.jg. Naim, aCSO

“Fine by me, Lieutenant. Ask her if she is available and if she agrees, tap her for your project.” and he nodded once.

“Thank you, Sir,” Naim replied with a nod and smile and then turned her attention back to her PaDD.

~Lt.jg. Naim, aCSO

Logan said, “Maybe we can use local weapons? It’s just that I don’t want anyone to go down there without some basic form of protection. Of course, I’ve been trained to use any seemingly innocuous object as a lethal weapon.”

“It’s the Korean martial art, Moo Gi Gong,” he added.

CoS

Cochrane looked at the Chief of Security for a long moment before speaking. “Again. This is a diplomatic mission. And you, Mr. Logan, have a slightly more important task at hand. You will be responsible for formulating and implementing a training plan for their metropolitan police forces. So you need to familiarize yourself with their laws rules, and regulations. Less focus on fighting a people we are supposed to be befriending, more on making sure your portion of the mission goes well, shall we?” and he paused for a moment to make sure the point was recieved.

“Of course, Sir,” Logan agreed. “I always hope for the best possible outcome.”

“Our tech is not illegal on the planet. As long as it stays with us. You and your team will have standard issue sidearms. I expect, however, that you become familiar with their police issue, as that is what you will training them with. And Mr. Logan, I do not expect combat drills and martial arts demonstrations. You are to help them develop better ways of policing and responding to the needs of the community; not killing those they are supposed to be protecting. Community involvement programs, outreach, communications between law enforcement and local leadership… that sort of thing. Application of force should be a minuscule part of the training.”

Cochrane, CO

“I’ll have to study up on their current law enforcement capabilities,” Logan said.

CoS

“Oh don’t worry Lieutenant, I’m sure it can’t be that complicated, even for someone like you,” Walker said grinning. “Plus I’ll make sure you get where you need to go. That is after all what the Captain wants me to do.”

Zef had none of the skills mentioned in the brief, so she spoke out from her place by the door. “Excuse me, Sir. Where would you like me in this particular setting we’re discussing?” She supposed he might tell her to stay on the ship, but it was always more interesting to meet a new people. She hoped she was going to be allowed on the away team.

—Rollo, CNS

“Counselor, you will be with the diplomatic contingent. Your perspective may prove useful.”

WO Darach - COO

Logan said, “I’ll need to evaluate their current capabilities, and see where they have any weaknesses. As well as their crime rates to note any trends.”

CoS

Cochrane looked at the Security Chief. “I would recommend that you also take the opportunity to learn from them as well.”and then he addressed the entirety of the attendees. “And that goes for everyone. Always keep in mind. This civilization was warp capable before the Vulcans. Don’t let their choice to back down from that give you a false sense of superiority.” and he looked at the PaDD before him. “Engineering. What do you think? What materials and how long for your projects?”

Cochrane, CO.

Walker leaned back in his chair as he started making a few notes. He slowly shook his head, Drake was going to get himself in trouble for sure this time. Why did everyone make assumptions about these people, just because of the way they chose to live. It was just one of this mysteries of life apparently.

There was a call from the bridge at this point. =^= Captain, Ensign Aubrey Eton here. I have a Minister Jawn Biehl on the comms for you from the Graven home world. It is visual. =^= Aubrey’s accent was classic from the British colonies of Alpha Centauri which, oddly enough, was more of a Cockney Accent.
- Wookiee

Raising an eyebrow he looked over at the Captain. “I don’t recall another message being on their welcome list Captain.”

WO Darach - COO

Cochrane looked at Darach and said “Me either.” and then said “Send it to the Conference Room, Ensign.” and he stood up and looked towards the screen on the wall.

Cochrane, CO

Aubrey replied =^= Of course, Guv, er Captain =^=

A moment later the screen lit up. The top of a wooden desk could be seen between the screen and the individual there. Said individual was plum purple with a round face and thinning silver hair. He bore a razor like 5cm beard beard that just followed the line of his chin and jaw. He wore a silver patterned blazer and lighter shirt that appeared most similar to a clerical collar of old. Behind him was a broad window divided up into smaller panes looking out onto a blue-green vista - a yard with trees and what looked like a swing hanging from one broad branch. The leaves/foliage/grass had a blue green coloration to them. He appeared to gaze around at the room. =^= I do hope I am not interrupting. I was made aware that your vessel had passed the last buoys and I wished to extend my greeting. I am Minister Jawn Biehl. Welcome to Graven. The Visitor Center in our Capital City is ready to welcome you, when you are ready of course. =^=
- Wookiee for JB

=^= Minister. It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Captain Alexander Cochrane, Commanding Officer of the research vessel Manhattan. On behalf of the United Federation of Planets and the crew of the Manhattan, I thank you for your warm welcome. We will be assuming standard orbit and coming down in short order. I am briefing my Senior Officers on the proposed projects your government has asked for assistance with, and we will be happy to discuss the particulars once we are planet side. Will we be meeting you at the Visitor’s Center, sir? =^=

Cochrane, CO

Jawn Biehl smiled, his teeth a light violet hue. =^= Captain, I am pleased to meet you at last. Your invitation of help has been met with considerable animation among my counselling committee. While others have offered to help none have done so with the simple offer without recompense. Our offices are not far. Transport will be awaiting you. They will take you to the Ministry. Is there anything specific you require - dietary restrictions, allergies and the like? =^=
- Jawn Biehl

Looking at the man’s skin, Jasmine immediately began to theorize why the man looked so purple and appeared so humanoid. It was more than a casual interest thought. In humans, skin that color had one diagnosis: Argyria. This was caused by the element silver and being exposed to excessive amounts to it. Typically it was found in people that worked silver mines where they inhaled the dust, factories where they processed it, or by those that ate it. Since silver was not processed by the body or known to be found naturally in extreme levels in food, only people suffering from PICA got it from ingestion. There was no treatment to remove the color from the skin that worked one hundred percent. All of this could just be a coincidence. They were an alien species and the length of time the crew were going to be down there should not cause any real effects but she would ask science to run a scan looking to make sure there wasn’t any insane amount to silver deposits on the surface which could turn the crew into Violet Beauregarde’s.

Jasmine Wynter CMO

Cochrane shook his head slightly and said =/\= No, sir. But we do have a few questions before we depart the Manhattan, if you have the time? =/\= and he tapped a command into the tabletop interface that sent a message to all attendees that now was the time to clarify any questions.

Cochrane, CO

=^= Absolutely, Captain. This is your first visit to Graven and I imagine you have many. =^= He paused and looked down at his desk which as far as they could tell was bare in that area but for some sheafs of paper and a pen/stylus. =^= I cannot imagine that any given … world is the same. Of the various parties I have met with in the few years of my tenure here everyone is vastly different. =^=
= Jawn Biehl

=^= Indeed they are, Minister. But the United Federation of Planets believes that those differences are what makes us stronger, and should not be grounds to divide us. All species and civilizations have something they can contribute to the betterment of all, if they want to. We as members of Star Fleet are here to assist in making that possibility a reality. We want to be respectful visitors, sir. To that end we are here to assist you and your people however we can. And we will strive to respect your culture and people in every task we take on. =^=

Cochrane, CO

OOC: DH’s feel free to speak up with questions or needs. But BE POLITE.

James

=^= Minister, I am Warrant Officer Darach. I’ll be coordinating the transfer of our people and appropriate materials as needed to the surface. I’ve been reviewing the documentation that was sent to us, but is there anything else that we should be aware of before transporting down? =^=

WO Darach - COO

=^= Ah, that is a common question. The Visitor Centre is located along the wharves and has a space there for vessels to land. Cargo can be loaded and off loaded there onto ships. For those with matter transports there are cargo pads both near the VC and the wharves. At the wharves there are vehicles and rail lines if need be. There is also accommodation at the VC for your stay. =^=

=^= Thank you Minister. =^=

“Like can we wear our duty uniforms, and bring with us our standard away team equipment,” Logan added.

CoS

Jawn glanced down and seemed to scan a sheet on his desk. That didn’t appear to have been something front and center. =^= When people visit Graven they do so on their own cultural frameworks. We do not stifle that in the name of any personal propriety bias that we may have. The laws governing the world are strict and visitors crossing such are simply asked to leave. If your uniforms and gear are what you are comfortable in then by all means be comfortable. =^=
Jawn

Walker looked over at Logan and just raised an eyebrow. What was the Lieutenant doing? If anything it seemed like he was trying to undermine the Captain so he could take a heavily armed security team to the surface. Giving up, Walker just shook his head. He was starting to feel sorry for him, for whatever happened in his life to make him that paranoid.

WO Darach - COO

Naim let a short moment pass after Jawn had finished speaking to make sure she wasn’t going to interrupt anyone. She then said with a polite smile, “Good day Sir. I’m Lieutenant Kiama Naim, the Chief Science Officer. I’ve been told that you need assistance with improving the crop yield on some of your larger agri-farms. With regard to that I’m wondering if you could give me more information about the types of crop, your stand on genetic engineering and the type of equipment used on your world for farming? Knowing all of that before hand would help me and my department to prepare better and help you in the best way possible. We want to be respectful of your culture and your way of living.” The often impulsive and and emotional Betazoid was showing a side of her that not many people on the Manhattan had seen yet. There was a calmness and unintrusive self-assurance about her and something one might call a non-anxious presence.

~Lt.jg. Naim, aCSO

=^= Be welcome to Graven Lieutenant. The assistance comes with one field in particular. It is newly opened and has been giving us trouble. The climate and conditions suggest grains to be farmed like with surrounding agro regions, however it has not borne fruit. Soil samplings do not render anything that we can point to for the cause. We rely on farm equipment that is physically intensive for cultivation and harvesting – tracked machinery. We have considerably genetically engineered crops – that has been pursued for millennia. =^= He smiled – a kind, grandfather like smile. =^= I am touched by your consideration for us. Thank you. =^=

Max had been busy scanning the files he had received for the upgrades and repairs to one of the Geothermal power plants on the planet. The CO was right, with their standard equipment the work would only have taken a few short days but even though their tech wasn’t illegal on the planet, it had to stay with them. That meant that no upgrades they carried out could utilizes their tech or need their tech to repair or replace once they had left, meaning that everything had to be redesigned to work with the tech they used themselves in mind. That was the kicker.

“I’m going to need more information on the types of equipment we have to work with on Graven,” Max added after Naim had spoken. “The work itself isn’t an issue, and will progress quickly but what we use has to remain applicable top Graven’s capability to repair and replace, that’s going to take some time to redesign.”

Lt Cmdr Wynter, CE

=^= We can happily supply you with that information. Our .. problem in this case is similar to the question of our agro production. We have a mystery. We have been utilizing this facility for a great number of years. Recently it has been expanded to include that of more ancient wells that had been long closed. That has been quite successful in such re-utilization of past resources. However, the pipes and tubing we have been using has begun to corrode at an alarming rate and the facility is close to becoming a danger. Replacing the piping has resulted in parts of the facility closing for long periods of time and the corrosion has continued. Our sensing methods have not detected anything to cause that. Both may be related as geographically the agro and geothermal areas are not far apart. =^=
