The Manhattan cut a fine line through space as she approached the Graven system. Scans showed a cluttered system of some 26 planets and two partial asteroid belts that surrounded a class G yellow star. A fine ‘cloud’ of particles diffused the sun’s light to create the life-giving world that was Graven XII. Many of the planets showed a mineral rich environment, though only three suggested possible life - Graven XII, a sister world in near similar, if almost opposite orbit to Graven XII, and a moon around a world numbered Graven XVI.

As the ship approached the system, a buoy was detected at the edge of the system. As soon as it’s sensors detected the Starfleet vessel it transmitted a message to them.

Alex sat in the Command chair and saw the incoming message notification. “Ok, all… here we go. Let’s make some new friends, shall we.?” and he looked at the comms officer. “On screen, if you would be so kind, Ensign.”

Logan monitored for any other ship activity. He wondered if they were going to beam down in normal uniforms or not.

The screen magnified to focusing on the buoy. It was a small, cube shaped device about two meters to a side. Each corner showed lights flashing slowly. The translation of the transmission was as follows:

‘Welcome to Graven. We are pleased to receive visitors on our homeworld of Graven XII. Follow the navigational buoys to your destination. Please do not deviate. All visitors are welcome to land in the space port in the capital city of K’mar. A visitor center and hotel are provided for your assistance and comfort. The spaceport limit is ten thousand tonnes. Matter transport is acceptable and a platform is available for your use at the visitor center. Use frequency 195.87 to locate. All traffic is welcome between the local hours of 8am and 7pm. No travel or transport is permitted outside of those hours. Once you arrive people will be there to assist you in whatever you require. Local time is now 1:24pm. We hope your stay at Graven XII is a pleasurable one.’

Kaia wiggled excitedly at the engineering station on the bridge, hoping she’d be chosen for the away team.

Naim was manning the science station on the bridge. And while she diligently kept a close eye on the readings in front of her, she also listened closely to what was happening around her. She was excited that they had arrived at Graven XII, so much so that she was having a hard time sitting still and keeping herself from clapping her hands and squealing in excitement. And sensing the emotions of everyone around her only heightened her own excitement.

Walker made some notes.

“Synchronizing ship clocks on my mark Captain. And, mark.”

Walker looked over at the Captain. Now just to find out what they were going to be doing here.

Cochrane looked around and said “Ok, then. Comms, dial in the specified frequency and hail the Visitor Center. Put it on screen when we are through.” and he looked at the assembled bridge crew. “Senior staff to the Briefing room in ten minutes.” and he looked at the Science station. “Ensign Naim, you’ll be joining us as the Science Department representative until the CSO is feeling better.”

Looking up in surprise, Naim replied in a clear and steady voice, “Yes, Sir.” While she felt sorry that her superior officer was still ill, she also felt proud that she would be representing the Science Departement in the senior staff meeting. It was something she hadn’t expected to happen on her first mission after graduation.

Once the ten minutes till the Senior Staff meeting were almost over, Naim rose from her station and walked towards the conference room. Once inside, she stood towards the left side of the door, her back straight, shoulders slightly squared and her hands behind her back. She wasn’t sure were she was supposed to sit, so standing next to the door felt like a good choice for now. While she stood there, waiting for the others to arrive, she hoped that her excitement and nervousness wouldn’t be too obvious.

There was an almost instantaneous lock with the comms and buoys ‘lit up’ as they detected the Manhattan’s approach through the system. As there had been a stand by on the Manhattan’s end there was no response but an indicator that they had received the signal and were aware of the Manhattan’s approach.

A curious thing for a race who had opted for a much more ‘basic’ lifestyle.

“Well, so much for a warm welcome then.” Cochrane said. “Helm bring us in, 3/4 impulse and assume standard orbit. Scan for any other vessels in the area and any artificial satellites.” and then he pressed the comm button on his chair. =/\= All hands, this is the Captain. We are approaching Graven XII. All senior staff report to the Conference room immediately. Bridge out. =/\= He then stood up and said “Ensign Mijg, you have the conn.” and nodded to the present Command staff and began moving to join the meeting.

The Manhattan followed a line of buoys toward the homeworld of Graven XII. Twenty Six planets and two partial asteroid belts around a large yellow star. Three moons graced the homeworld’s orbit. Many of the planets registered as rich in resources. The ship passed an abandoned mining platform and sensors noted a moonbase that had at one point been extensive, though now showed to be mothballed. Orbiting the main homeworld were a number of satellites - navigational as well as communications and sensor related. None were military. Three space stations were in orbit. Two were on low power and uninhabited. One, a larger facility that looked to once have been a shipyard of sorts had been refitted as a docking port for visiting ships.

The planet itself was smaller than earth, though denser making its gravity to be .95 of earth. It had impressive ice caps with lakes and seas mainly about the equator. Cities principally followed the rivers and seas with the roughly one billion inhabitants living in the temperate equatorial zone. It was on one of the equatorial seas that the capital of K’mar was found, and, thanks to a beacon, the visitor facility was on the banks of the sea.

There were three other ships in orbit. One, a familiar Kazon freighter, was docked to the port. A small Talaxian trader was making a descent into the atmosphere. A Voth vessel, much smaller than a previously known ‘city ship’, but still held the same style and shape orbited the world.

Kaia watched with very large eyes, taking everything in with wonder. She watched the senior staff with a small measure of jealousy, but a large measure of respect. They had the privilege and responsibility to go in there and know all the details. She could only hope she’d be chosen to go down there.

Kaia loved seeing new places. It was the reason she had joined Starfleet in the first place.

As the Manhattan settled into orbit, space around was very quiet certainly compared to many other worlds they had been to. The lack of spacecraft made travel very simple. Scans would show a very small history of fading warp signatures from visitors. As they scanned a sudden bright beam split the space as it deflected off a satellite down into the world.

Scans would show that it was from a quite advanced solar collector beaming power down to a collector station in the mountains of the northern hemisphere. It appeared that the principle power sources were renewable energy - solar and geo-thermal.
