“I see the draw but always get my arse kicked. I got a D in the self-defense required course at the academy. Then I made a friend who takes any form of friendly competition and turns it into a guerrilla match. I am like that sick, young, zebra with three legs and half a hoof when I spar but it does feel good to hit someone at times,” Jasmine took a deep drink of her coffee after trying to imitate the highly uncombative animal she just described.

Calloway snorted. “You wouldn’t have lasted two seconds as a Maquis. Shame. We could have used a few more people with a sense of humour,” she said.

“If you ever want to try and be less like an animal going to be slaughtered, let me know. I can’t promise I’ll teach you stuff in the Starfleet combat book, but you’ll have a few tricks up your sleeve.” Faye shrugged. “Also can’t promise you won’t be cursing me for the first few sessions. It’s going to hurt.”

“Deal,” she smiled at Faye. This side of Faye was nice. It was often hidden though under a shield of wariness and a cloak of suspicion. Jasmine didn’t blame her for coming off as aloof. After the little bit Faye shared and the parts of her medical Jasmine could read, Faye had had a rough go of it. At least she was opening up to the crew now. Everyone needed a home. Maybe Faye finally found hers. “So do you have any family?”

The question, so basic, so universal, caught her off guard. Slightly wide eyed, her mouth opened to say something but nothing came out. It wasn’t like she hadn’t been asked the same exact thing recently, but the conversation had already been in that general area. “Uh, not really. Dominion killed everyone I knew, including my father, and my mother disappeared the year before. Last I heard she had returned to the the Alpha Quadrant after being in the Delta Quadrant on the Voyager, but…” Faye shrugged. “I haven’t heard from her and there’s no trace of her, so either she doesn’t know I’m alive or doesn’t care enough to bother.”

Faye brushed the thoughts in the air with a careless gesture of her hand. “Please tell me you have a better family picture than mine…”

“I do but sometimes having a family that is not attached at the hip isn’t bad,” Jasmine leaned back. “When I had to apply to the Ministry of Harmony it was a nightmare. My mother kept trying to change my answers when I returned home at night. She felt I should answer a certain way on the marital expectations subsections. For three nights in a row she went over point by point of what she thought my answer would be for a happy family. Oh, and good lord the sections on vacations, laundry duties, and types of casseroles had me wanting to pull out my hair. The system matches you based on your likes and needs not your mothers but try telling her that,” Jasmine let out a long chuckle.

Ministry fo Harmony? Oh, Faye had questions, but it sounded like something that they would have to get to another time.

“It was no better when we had the Pre-Cana week and I had to go to Max’s family. He got out of going to my parents because of Starfleet and I am still trying to remind my mom it was not his choice,” she sighed deeply. “As much as we try to ignore it, we are like mini-versions of our families. We think we aren’t and are so different but I can guarantee Max will flip his lid if his kids try to just date it out to find their married matches.”

Faye’s mind latched on to the idea of being mini versions of her parents. Was she more like one than that other? Well, last the remembered, neither of her parents had issues with mental illness, so that seemed to be entirely her own bit of fun. Gazing off, he eyes seemingly focused on the wall behind Jasmine, Faye murmured. “I’d like to say I was like my father, but I fear I’m probably more like my mother.”

“What was she like,” Jasmine asked softly taking a sip of her coffee. Faye did not have a family like hers, that was obvious. All her past experiences had created the woman before her. Hopefully, Faye would not continue the sins of the father scenario.

“My mom?” Faye said, frowning slightly. She pondered and tried to sort through what she knew was true about the woman and what she probably had assumed in more recent years.

“Rebellious. Strong-willed. Defiant, but with a strong sense of justice. She liked simple things and seemed to like a quiet life, but if you got between her and someone she loved, oh boy, watch out. She wasn’t afraid of throwing a punch to defend herself,” she said, grinning slightly. “But she sometimes got this strange far away look, like she was elsewhere entirely. Some days I felt like she had settled for a life on Tracken, and had wanted something more. ” Calloway shrugged. “She loved me, and my Dad. I know that much. When she disappeared, I watched the sky for signs of a ship heading for the surface hoping it would be her. But she never came and then the Dominion came. Bad trade off if I do say so myself.”

“My mom’s biggest issue is getting into her own head. When I was about fifteen I realized I could never let a message she sent me go unread. I tried one time. I was out with my friends camping. When the first one came through, it was simple. It was how is it going, Jasmine. When I didn’t answer it moved to are you okay. It was late and I decided I would go to bed and call her in the morning. When I woke up there was 37 messages and 52 missed calls. It started as panic and then turned into a fight he basically had with herself reading and replying to her own texts she sent me. I kept them so if they ever question her sanity I can show the counselor,” Jasmine found the screen and turned it to show Faye.

=/\=Jasmine I know you are busy but you don’t have to ignore me =/\= 2215 hours

=/\= Mom I went to bed. What are you doing? 37 messages and 52 missed calls? =/\= 0732 hours from Jasmine’s communicator
=/\=Just making coffee. How was your night=/\= 0732 hours

Jasmine pulled the communicator back. “I learned it is best to just stop and text her no matter what I am doing that night,” she laughed. “Mom’s do things we don’t understand but in the end we still love them because there is nothing else we can do. Even if they are bat snot crazy at times.”
