“Young Klingon or anyone young any day fo the week,” Celina said immediately and confidently. “The young have egos and half the time it is too large to fit in a room. They run around spouting nonsense about how amazing and tough and fierce they are to anyone that listens. They act impulsively and claim foul play or the occasional death vengeance when they are defeated by actual brain over brawn.” Leaning forward, Celina lowered her voice just for effect. “The brawn comment is symbolic of their ego. The arrogance of the young will always be their downfall. Sure every once in a while someone comes along that does not fit this bill but that is a miracle and few and far between. Now the older opponent may not move as fast nor be as strong but they are typically always cunning. Old opponents don’t get to be old opponents by flexing their muscles and professing how smart they are. Old opponents have a vast set of life experiences to draw on so even if they are faced with a younger opponent touting how superior they are and flexing whatever they are using for muscles in this analogy, they will just pull out a phaser and shoot them. A lot like that scene in the cinematic classic Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. So to bottom line it, I would take the cocky young warrior because they typically are the easier to defeat.”

Balian nodded, that was his assessment as well. Old foes were experienced or lucky foes. While you did not court, or count on luck, it was a factor in all combat. Young foes were generally brash, loud, and locked on to their pride still. That was something you learned to divorce yourself from if you stayed in the game long enough. Balian could swallow his pride when he needed to.

Looking at the Chief Tactical Officer for a moment, she was still young, and that was not in comparison to his age, but just in general. She had lots left to learn but likely would live to learn it, she had a good head on her shoulders. Even if she played at looking like a less intelligent person at times. Balian sighed softly. “You have heard of Murphy’s Law I assume, how familiar with Cole’s law?”

“Is Cole the brasher, younger, hotter brother that showed Murphy up for his entire life until the day he met a holy man on a Tibetan mountain peak and learned how to be humble,” Celina asked in a serious tone but a half smile. While it was very stereotypical, her mother and abuela loved tele Novelas. The way Balian had asked the question and his facial expression for some reason reminded her of the episode where Juan told Maria her first ex husband from high schools brother was back in town and looking to meet up with her older sister.

Letting out a laugh from her private joke she looked at Balian. “What’s Coles law,” she asked again a bit more serious

“Shredded Cabbage, and carrot sweet creamy dressing” Balian replied with a quick laugh. It was a cheesy joke but a joke none the less. “What did you think coleslaw was?”

Celina blurted out a large laugh. If she had been drinking it would have come out her nose. Balian was not like any Captain she had met before. There was an easy charm to him. He was comfortable telling jokes or handing out commands. “I am Puerto Rican. We don’t do coleslaw.” Celina let the sound of the ticking clock fill the empty air for a second just enjoying the time with her CO.

Since Balian asked a more work-related question, she decided to also. “Okay skipper here is a moral dilemma for you. You are administering an evacuation and have only one escape pod left. You know that the crew has informed you there is one child left to be evacuated and they are on their way however they are across the ship and you only have ten seconds to launch the pod for success. Standing in front of you is an able bodied man that if you put in the pod now he will survive. Do you ensure at least one person survives and send the man or do you pray the countdown is wrong, the crew bringing the child will get there in time, and refuse to eject it without the child in it?” This question was heavy but the man was her Captain. His job requirement was to make the tough calls. She simply wondered what his call would be.

“Save those that can be saved, bird in the hand and all” Balian hated the answer but it was the right one. If the child was across the ship they wouldnt make it. “Launch all ready pods, shuttles the emergency shelter. Find the child hydrazine to sub comatose and launch in an environmental collection probe, Captain goes down with the ship ” Balian almost poured another.
