Faye turned at the hips in her chair and looked back at the display screen that was now simple schematics. But she still saw the images from before scrolling through slowly like a terrible nightmare. It was the stuff of her own nightmares, making her already difficult dreams ten times worse some nights. “We need to repair the blown conduit and juncture and finish installing the last checkpoint,” she said softly. “Then I have to do some final tests before we bring the rest of the system online.”

Turning back to her colleagues at the table, Faye tapped the table with her right ring finger. I had about eighteen hours of work left to do on my own before the… accident. On my own it would be more like thirty-two hours including repair work. But between the three of us we can get it done in a day.” She shifted her gaze to Wynter. “Provided you keep Ensign Frakenstein away from the systems.” She leaned forward, her stormy eyes darkening. “And as an aside, I would highly suggest that the ensign be told to keep out of my way for awhile. I don’t think it would be in either of our best interests for out paths to cross just now.”

Cochrane looked at Faye and said “Lieutenant. Personal animosity gets set aside for the sake of the ship. We are all professionals here, the Ensign included. This will be used as a coaching opportunity for a new officer.” and then he looked at the table as a whole. “Lieutenant Calloway says it can be done in a day. You have eighteen hours. I want a full systems diagnostics on all systems, including the new protections, commencing at that time. Engineering and Ops, you are to take your cues from Lieutenant Calloway during that time. Utilize whatever resources are needed, but get this done. No more drama. The task is now known to all invested parties. So let’s get to work. Any questions? If not, you are all dismissed.”

That Ensign should thank the lucky stars that he wasn’t under Walker. Oh, it would definitely be a constructive lesson, with plenty of time for the Ensign to think about the reasons for safety protocols. There was probably a transporter or two that needed a good degauzing. But it is what it is.

“Yes sir.”

Well, there was a damned good reason Faye wasn’t in charge of anyone else. She might have learned to play nice with other, but that didn’t mean she got along with people very well. Most days, she simply disliked other people, unless she had reason not to. Whether it was the sum weight of her experiences or just the oddity of her brain, Faye understood that her statement to the CE wasn’t some thug making threats, it was a protection for all of them. She just needed space. Wasn’t it equally professional to recognize when someone needed that? Inwardly, she simply sighed and nodded to the Captain before rising to her feet.

Stepping over to the display, she shifted through and gazed one last time at the haunting image of the Odyssey before she cleared out the files and logged off. Moving back to the table, she placed the device back into the crate and prepared to leave.

“So Lieutenant. Since we are at your disposal, where do you want me to start?”

Faye exhaled and gazed at Darrach and then Wynter. “We need to get down to the Jefferies tube and properly assess the damage. Then we get to work repairing stuff. I can show you what the network looks like too. I need to grab some stuff, so… meet you there?”

“Sounds good to me, I’ll just have to grab some tools and I’ll meet you there. Anything you can show us on how it networks might help us see it coming a bit quicker.”

Walker was sure she wasn’t happy about having to tell them about this, but hopefully this would be a pretty decent compromise.

Her stomach felt heavy, like she had swallowed a weight. It was one thing to brief people on her work, but now she was letting into the delicate insides of it. It made her nervous. But Faye couldn’t do more than simply hope Blue could keep the brass off her back long enough for her to get this situation under control. “I’ll meet you there. Bring a basic set of tools each, plus a set of fine optical instruments. We’ll probably need them at one point or another. See you in fifteen,” Calloway said before grabbing her crate and leaving the room.
