Location: Security Office / Tactical Operations
Participants: Lieutenant Saxon Kreeger, Chief of Security; Tactical personnel
Classification: Internal Security Operations

The briefing room had barely begun to empty when Lieutenant Saxon Kreeger made his way toward the Security Office, the Captain’s final instructions still fresh in his mind.

The Predator.

A Klingon warbird operating deep in the Delta Quadrant, far outside the region where Starfleet intelligence normally expected to encounter Klingon vessels. Whatever had brought the ship this far from Klingon space was significant enough to warrant attention, and now the warbird was apparently in some form of distress.

Kreeger wasn’t concerned simply because the vessel was Klingon. Klingons were potential allies as often as they were adversaries, and Starfleet had dealt with Klingon vessels for centuries. His concern was the unknown surrounding the Predator.

No one aboard the Manhattan yet knew what had happened to the warbird.

That was the problem.

Kreeger entered the Security Office and placed his PADD on the central workstation before activating the main display.

“Computer, open a security planning file for the Klingon warbird Predator.”

The terminal acknowledged the command.

Kreeger brought up the information currently available to Security and opened a second tactical workspace.

“Cross-reference everything currently available on the Predator with known Klingon warbird configurations. I want weapons systems, defensive capabilities, known boarding access points, transporter capabilities, escape systems, engineering access, command areas, and any known modifications.”

He paused.

“Flag anything that does not correspond with a standard Klingon configuration.”

Kreeger studied the tactical display for several moments.

There were too many unknowns.

The Manhattan wasn’t going there to start a fight. The Captain had made that clear. Their primary mission was to render assistance if the Klingons needed it.

But assistance aboard a Klingon warbird was not the same thing as responding to a disabled Federation vessel.

Kreeger opened a new operational planning file.

“Create three contingencies. First: Predator is disabled but remains under Klingon control and requests assistance. Second: Predator has suffered an unknown incident and conditions aboard the vessel are unsafe. Third: Predator is compromised, hostile, or unable to maintain control of the vessel.”

He leaned forward slightly.

“Include boarding procedures, emergency extraction, transporter restrictions, medical isolation, and containment protocols.”

His expression remained calm as he considered the first scenario.

“If they ask for help, we help them. Engineering gets access if they need it. Medical gets access if there are casualties. But nobody boards that warbird without knowing who is receiving us and where we’re going.”

Kreeger opened the boarding-party roster.

“I want an emergency boarding team assembled. Security personnel capable of handling both rescue and defensive operations. Standard phaser equipment. Full tricorder capability. Emergency medical equipment. No heavy weapons unless circumstances warrant them.”

He paused.

“And make sure everyone understands the distinction between preparedness and provocation.”

Kreeger had no intention of having a Starfleet security team walk onto a Klingon warbird looking for a confrontation.

“If the Predator establishes communications and confirms that its command structure remains intact, the boarding team operates under the authority of the Klingon commanding officer while aboard their vessel, within the limits of our own security requirements.”

His eyes narrowed slightly as he considered the second possibility.

“If communications are unavailable, contradictory, or we’re receiving indications of internal fighting, hostile activity, or some kind of external influence, that changes things.”

The transporter protocols appeared on the display.

“Transporter Operations is to remain prepared for emergency extraction. However, no Klingon personnel are transported aboard the Manhattan without authorization from the bridge. Any personnel transported from the Predator are to undergo immediate medical and environmental screening before being released into the ship.”

He considered the wording for a moment.

“Same procedure whether they’re Klingon warriors, officers, engineers, or civilians.”

Kreeger then moved to the tactical display.

“And I want Tactical prepared for the possibility that the Predator can still fight.”

His eyes remained on the image of the Klingon warbird.

“That means weapons systems remain ready, shields remain available, and we maintain enough distance to react if something goes wrong. We’re not going to point phasers at them just because they’re Klingons, but we’re also not going to put the Manhattan in a position where one unexpected weapons discharge becomes a disaster.”

He entered another instruction.

“Computer, cross-reference known Klingon warbird weapons and defensive systems against Manhattan tactical countermeasures. Identify likely vulnerabilities and recommended defensive responses.”

Kreeger’s attention shifted to the boarding procedures.

“If we discover casualties, our priority is extraction and stabilization. If we discover an active threat, our priority becomes containment.”

He paused.

“And if we discover both…”

A faint sigh escaped him.

”…we deal with both.”

Kreeger picked up his PADD and began reviewing the available intelligence on Klingon warbird operations.

The Predator was not simply another damaged vessel.

It was a Klingon warbird, operating somewhere the Klingons had apparently had little reason to be.

And whatever had happened to it might explain why it was there.

Kreeger looked once more toward the tactical display.

“Let’s find out what we’re walking into.”

The Security Office returned to its quiet rhythm as the Manhattan continued toward the Delta Quadrant.

For now, Kreeger’s job was simple.

Prepare for the rescue. Prepare for the threat. Assume neither until the facts were known.
