USS Manhattan
Side Sum: Finn checking out his quarters.
Posted by Ensign Finn Wolf (Security Officer) in Finn checking out his quarters.
“Deck 12!” Finn exclaimed to himself as he found himself wandering the corridors of the Manhattan’s engineering hull. “They fix the turbolift cars on this deck, and this is where Kreeger assigns me quarters. Heck, I have to go up three decks just to get to the Crew Mess.” He follows along the curvature of the corridor reading off room numbers until he finds his assigned room. ‘1249 Crew Quarters’“Here is where I will be spending the next three years of my life.” he says before touching the entry button. The door slides open to reveal a small single room. A seating area, with a partial partition to indicate the sleeping area. Doors to a refresher and closet are nearby. There is a small work area against an interior wall, and thankfully, he an economy replicator.
“Typical Starfleet issue. At least I am not sharing a room with someone there is that. If I am going to be ‘entertaining’ I need to brighten this place up.” Looking at his bed he decided to give it a test. Wolf does a backward flop into the single bed and lands with a thud. “Typical paper thin mattress. I might as well be sleeping on a camping cot.”
Crossing to the replicator he checks out the standard interface. Mostly food choices and small household selections. =^= “Computer, where can I have larger items replicated aboard Manhattan?”
=^= “Please state the parameters of your request.” =^=
=^= “Mattress, Single, inter spring, 13 inch height.” =^=
=^= “Items of that size can be replicated using the replicators on Deck 20.” =^=
=^= “Thank you, Computer.” =^=
Really Wolf, you’re going to ride the turbolift to Deck 20. Replicate a real, soft, sturdy mattress for a bed you’re only going to use aboard this ship. Then carry if back through the corridors. It will be like move-in day all over again. Sure…what could go wrong?
Ensign Wolf, Sec JO
USS Manhattan
Wolf takes the turbolift to Deck 20. He visually takes in the dimensions of the car and whether it can hold the mattress upright. He is satisfied that all will go well.
When the car arrives he follows the map on the corridor. He’s looking for the shuttle repair station. He finds the room easily and once he enters, he sees that there is a shuttlecraft in mid repair. That’s fine for him. He just needs the industrial replicator in this bay for his mattress.
“Hey Buddy, No Unauthorized Access. We’re in the middle of a repair here.” He is challenged by an engineer noncom assigned to the repair.
“Don’t mind me. I’m just here to use the replicator and I’ll be out of your way.” Wolf replied with a toothy grin.
“The replicator is for authorized use only. What do you need it for anyway?”
“I just need a new mattress in my quarters. The one I have is a medieval torture device.”
The noncom blinks his eyes not once but twice to that remark. “I know, right.” He replies enthusiastically, “It’s like the quartermaster corps gets them surplus from a Klingon penal colony. OK, Pal. I’ll help you use the replicator. Just don’t tell Kaia. The Chief can be a stickler for how we use this thing.”
The noncom and Wolf cross the industrial replicator. The noncom enters the dimensions, and other stats needed for the mattress Wolf is looking for. Soon a fat, comfy looking single mattress appears in a swirl of blueish light and sparkles.
“Ralphy, come help this guy get this mattress back to his quarters.” The noncom barks at an enlisted engineering mate who just happened to walk by them with a tool.
“Where are we going with this thing? Deck 4, Deck 5?” he asks sarcastically.
“Deck 12.” Wolf answers.
“!2? Who did you tick off to be assigned quarters down with the working folks?”
“Let’s just say I don’t want him to find out about this. He too can be a stickler for rules.”
The unlikely pair of security ensign and engineering mate muscle the mattress out of the repair bay, through the corridor, into a turbolift car, through another corridor, and finally to room 1249. Wolf thanks the young crewman and slips him an access card for use in the crew mess telling him to share it with his squad. After he leaves Wolf replicates a set of sheets for his new mattress and makes his bed. Then the test. The flop causes him to bound back up. With a smile, he exclaims…
One task down. Hopefully this place will feel like home soon enough.”
