USS Manhattan
Amory
[LOCATION: Armory, USS Manhattan | 12:30 Hours]
The air in the armory was heavy with the smell of ozone and the sharp, metallic tang of recharge cycles. It wasn’t an office, not by Starfleet design standards, but it was the best Lieutenant Saxon Kreeger could do. He had converted an old tactical equipment locker into a workspace, using a magnetized heavy-duty crate as a desk. The flickering overhead light—which he had been meaning to fix for three weeks—cast long, dancing shadows over the wall of phaser rifles and kinetic dampeners behind him.
Saxon leaned back, the metal legs of his stool groaning in protest. He rubbed his temples, staring at the PADD in his hand. The security logs for the last shift were clean, perhaps too clean.
Security Log Update: 12:28
Status: All decks secure. Sensor integrity at 98%.
Note: Minor fluctuation in the maintenance tunnel near Engineering. Likely a loose power coupling or a rogue crew member taking a shortcut. Flagged for review.
”Shortcuts,” Saxon muttered to the empty room. “They’re the death of security protocols.”
He tossed the PADD onto the crate-desk, the sound echoing sharply against the reinforced bulkhead. He missed the hum of a real office, the quiet isolation of an actual command deck. Here, every time someone requisitioned a standard-issue phaser, he had to clear his throat and act the part of the quartermaster before he could go back to analyzing tactical threat patterns.
He pulled his uniform jacket straight, checked his sidearm out of habit, and stood up. The Manhattan felt restless today, a tremor in the floor plating that spoke of warp drive calibration issues. It made his skin itch. He stood at the center of the armory, looking at the blinking status lights of his arsenal, waiting for the inevitable comms chime.
