She gazed at him thoughtfully for a moment. “The few times I’ve been in here late, Harv has been nothing but gracious. He wouldn’t offer anything if he wasn’t in a position too. And…” Faye chewed on her lower lip for a second. “While the food has been just fine, I’m of the perhaps less common mindset that food is food. If it’s not spoiled, I’m happy. And if it’s hot, well, then, it’s a great day.”

Cochrane tsk’d her and smiled. “Shame on you, Lieutenant. Food can be an amazing experience. It can also bring people together, force them apart… there can be a lot of emotion tied to food. And even if you aren’t the one vested in it, you can tell a lot about a person by how they cook or how they eat. It’s a good way to get a read on people, actually. What they order, how they like to spice things, how they eat their food… all of these thing can be used to get information about a person.”

“Sure, of course. If you have that option, I totally agree.” Calloway shrugged slightly. “I guess I just have had enough moments where any was good food. And these days, while my body is a bit more level, I had this period of time last year where I as slowly recovering my sense of taste.” She enjoyed food in the sense that she was grateful yet, but it hadn’t quite become a heightened sensory experience for her… yet.

“Taste is like a muscle. You have to exercise it to keep it in shape.” Cochrane replied and as if on cue, Harv arrived with two big bowls of his special stew and a loaf of dark bread. “Bon appetit.” he said and walked back to the kitchen. Cochrane leaned forward and smelled the steam coming off the bowl, and his stomach growled in response. Chuckling a bit, he said “Apologies, Lieutenant. I don’t think I quite got around to eating today.”

Faye smirked slightly at Cochrane. “And here you were giving me a hard time about the hours I kept. Aren’t commanding offices supposed to be setting good examples for their crew?” she said pointedly, only half-teasing.

She dug into the hot stew, grateful for its warmth and satisfying taste.

“We are. But I get a pass since I just got here.” he said with a chuckle. Taking a bite of the stew, his eyes went wide in surprise. After a few more bites, he said “This is amazing. I don’t think I’ve had anything like it… well, maybe once. But that was on Risa. I doubt that recipe has found it’s way to the Delta Quadrant.”
