Calloway laughed slightly, which in the last year had felt like something her mind and body finally, truly had allowed her to do honestly. “It was a part of necessary reading for an assignment a few years ago. But…” She paused long enough to set aside her tool and replace the conduit panel, giving it an almost affectionate double-tap.

Shifting her position, she started putting away her tools. “There’s…” Faye paused again and shook her head. “It’s hard to explain. I think if you stop thinking so hard about the meaning and what you think she’s trying to say, you realize the point is that it doesn’t matter. Her work is very intentionally open to interpretation. It’s like, and I don’t know if this is true in reality or not, she wants you to come to your own conclusions with the full realization that it’s a refection of the person reading. No more, no less.”

Cochrane looked at her for a moment in silence, and then blinked several times in surprise. “That’s… that’s almost verbatim what she told my Dad when he asked her about it. I remember she said after that ‘It does not matter what I believe someone else’s reality of existence is. That reality cannot be perceived by anyone but the person to whom that reality belongs. To believe that one can dictate the reality of others is flawed logic of the highest order.’ That really stuck with me.”

Faye let his words float through the space between them and her expression was pensive as she though about the deeper implications of such a belief. She nodded slowly. “Yes. And she’s right. It’s why communication is so difficult sometimes.”

She started to clean up, but continued her thoughts. “Take our interactions for example. It’s not that the other has been unwilling to hear what the other is saying or intending, but that our own experiences, our own lens has far more impact on the perception of another person’s message than we like to think. It take a lot of effort to step back and hear what a person intends to say. As we have observed, it’s something I’m still trying to figure out. Nuance can allude me at times, where as other moments, everything is nuance and it gets all muddy in my head.”

Cochrane picked up his over shirt and moved it out of the way and began picking up the odd bits here and there, seeing as Calloway was starting to clean up. “Well Lieutenant, all we can do is practice. And if I can help clear the muddy waters at all, I’m happy to help.”

She looked over her shoulder and grinned at him slightly. “I think we’re doing alright on that front so far. ” Calloway gestured to the creates and stuff. “If you don’t mind setting that stuff into our open crate, I’m about done here for the night. And thank you for the help. Sometimes I get caught up in the work and hours go by. Our chat at least reminded me that there other considerations to keep in mind. Like sleep. That might be good soon.” She knew he hadn’t been engaged in anything critically important or else he wouldn’t have come down here in the first place.

“You got it, Boss.” he said with a smile and set everything inside and closed the lid. “Sleep is a good idea. I’ve got another hour or so, then I have to get something to eat. Then sleep. And then up at it again tomorrow.” Looking around, he said “Are you good getting all of this out of here? I don’t want boxes cluttering up my super-cool ‘Everything had gone to crap’ bridge.” and he chuckled.
