Cochrane reached in and brought out the requested items. “If you don’t know what your tools can do and how they work, how are you supposed to use them properly?” and he handed her the two items. “Besides, ship’s systems do a lot more than people think, and can be used in ways that most don’t realize. Like on my last ship. We got boarded by some reptilian-types. I used the fire suppression system to knock them out. Cold on lizards equals hibernation.”

Faye nodded appreciatively. “Very nice there, Cochrane. I approve of your methods,” she said with feigned imperiousness.
After opening took the L-shaped pice of metal, which actually had little tiny connector spaces along one side. She flipped open the lid of the small heavy box he had brought out. Inside was filled with heavy little pieces of metal that resembled a nut but had a small prong that was threaded. Faye handed him the L-shaped part. “It’s so funny. People living on starships are so used to the high tech parts of our lives that they forget all the little physical bits that have to be put together to make it all work.”
“I need you to fit and screw in one of those connectors into each of the fifteen holes,” Faye said with an apologetic grin. “Bet this isn’t what you imagine you’d be doing tonight.”

The perpetually teenage boy part of his brain tried desperately to make a comment, but Cochrane’s professionalism and bearing won out… although a slight curl of the corner of his mouth did slip past. “Got it.” was all he said and he began attaching the connectors as directed. To her question, he said “Well I would be lying if I said it was, Lieutenant. But this is why I get the comfy chair on the bridge… my ability to adapt to the situation. Well, that and my willingness to sit on the floor of the Auxiliary Bridge when I should be doing something that doesn’t require me to sit on the floor of the Auxiliary Bridge.” he added with a chuckle, and he paused as he finished up the connections. “Here you go. What’s next?”

Faye had reached into the crate and pulled out sections of fibre-optic cabling that were attached to little connectors similar to the ones he had just been working with. She grinned. “Well, your willingness is very much welcome at the moment. Because now we’re going put this altogether, so if you can just hold this, I can feed the cabling through quickly and secure the pieces. Then I seal the one end. The other side will be left open until I am ready to hook it up to the power systems. But I have a few things to take care of tomorrow before I’m ready for that stage,” Faye explained.
With him holding the piece steady, Faye gently twisted the many strands of fibres and fed the whole lot through one of the holes, screwing in the end. “I actually could have had this all done for me before I arrived, but I insisted on changing the design slightly and there wasn’t time for prebuilt parts. So… I get the fun of doing as I go,” Faye said with some amusement. “It’s a good thing I don’t mind a bunch of tedious labour.”

“You sound like a bureaucrat. Taking joy in the tedious… not my strong suit. At all.” Cochrane replied while holding the device steady. After she had screwed on the piece, he said “So when is this magic of yours coming on line? I need to know when to release the streamers and issue the noise makers with the little curling and uncurling paper thing.”
