After leaving the staff meeting, the XO proceeded down to the computer sciences lab and walked in. “Lt. Elbbirt, I need you to see if you can get us a signal on any of their broadcasts and get us into any electronic libraries they have. We need to know about their history and current society.”

“Aye, Cmdr,” Elbbirt moved over to a console and began searching for a signal and looking for any kind of electronic library they could try to access without being noticed.

A few moments later, the doors parted and Ben stepped in.

“Hello Commander,” he said, with a smile. “I thought medical and science could tag team the investigation into the civilisation down there.” he continued. Taking position at another console, he started to study the readings of lifeforms, flora and fauna on the planet.

Shedda looked up, “Yes, Dr. That sounds like an excellent idea. Come join us. Elbbirt is trying to establish a link up to their computer systems.”

It didn’t take too long to establish access to what was seemingly a university database system - the encryption was shockingly sophisticated by still easy to bypass for the Manhattan crew.

A variety of topics were available, the translator having caught up enough for rough translation to be applied across the database. It wasn’t quite a perfect translation, but it should get the idea across

Among the topics that caught the science teams attention were:
- History of Molkas, 1270-present
- Civics and Civil Ethics
- Engineering Research Database
- Arts Study Library

As for the lifeform readings, they were indicative of a reasonably healthy Space Age civilization. About 4.7 Billion humanoids, high levels of planet and animal life. The initial scans seemed to indicate a more healthy ecosphere than Earth at the same level of development.

Shedda scanned the topics they had accessed. “Computer bring up the files contained in History of Molkas, 1270-present..” She turned to Hudson, “The captain has asked me for an archeological perspective of their civilization. I’m going to start there, but there is plenty of data to go through.”

The file library appeared obligingly at her request. It covered about 500 years of history, and much of it looked more or less standard for most civilizations - a handful of wars, key innovators, the rise and fall of nation-states. The pace, however, over the last 250 years, was abnormally fast - following a series of three ‘Aentekin Wars’, the rate of development spiked. The records seemed to indicate that the inhabitants had been at a point similar to Earth’s Napoleonic period immediately before the wars, but they had developed nuclear power only 100 years later. A unified world government had been formed relatively bloodlessly by the time of their first spaceflight. The records indicated that they’d been spacefaring for about 90 years currently, though there was no mention of the early warp tech the sensors had picked up.

Well now, that was unusual. It wasn’t that Shedda didn’t think it couldn’t happen, but it was unusual. She began searching more details about the ‘Aentekin Wars’. Specifically about the key figures and inventors. She wasn’t interested in the Engineering Research. She was interested in the people and their lives. What drove them to their discoveries, specifically any tales, myths, legends about these people. She also searched for any of those things, in general, about the people and their history.

“Well, that would explain the health of their ecosystem,” Ben said, looking over the results. “They appear to move from pre-industrial to post-nuclear ages within 100 years; I would say 4 times faster than Earth.”

“That’s quite fast by any standard,” Mal’athar agreed.

There were numerous records about the wars - they apparently had to do with one faction developing significantly more advanced technology, and their rivals trying to acquire this technology. The inventor of this revolutionary advance was harder to find - the couple consistent records seemed to indicate that it may have been invented by a woman named Telas, and associates. Aentekin appeared to be an epithet of some kind - the UT was still working on figuring out what it meant. The rest of the history of the wars and the lives of people during it seemed to be much like other world wars seen in various Federation species, though there did appear to be a definite shift in societal values to bring science to the forefront.

Aentekin, in fact, appeared 1032 times in the documents, sometimes referring to one individual, sometimes to a group, and a few times evidently various things named after the former two.

“Curious,” Ben said, looking at the results. “It was almost as if there was an external influence in the development of the society,” he said, mainly to himself, but loud enough for those in the room to hear.

Shedda grinned, “It does indeed. I want more records on this Telas woman and what exactly the shifts in values happened. What were their previous ideals and what or who exactly started that movement. Shedda quired the computer to see if she could find any further information.

=^= Computer, can you compare the records in Civics and Civil Ethics, Engineering Research, and Arts Studies, to see if there is a common time where there was a significant influence in the development of those philosophies, that could be considered abnormal when compared to historical philosophies. =^=.

The two results seemed to overlap to an extent. To the XO’s query, the computer spit out an aggregation of the value shift - they’d gone rather drastically from an individualist, militaristic ethos as a species to a much more collectivist society focused on improving overall knowledge over the course of about 15 years. This coincided with all primary source mentions of Telas - the computer located a painted portrait of the woman in accordance with the request for more on her specifically. She was a very serious-looking woman, with long straight bangs. The rest of her hair and head beyond the face was obscured in the portrait by a hood.
The CMO’s request quickly spit out an answer - those fields all shifted notably about 5 years after the value shift began to be recorded, with Arts trailing as the last of the number to shift.

Shedda looked over at Ben, “That’s… curious. There is not really any history on this Telas. And quite influential, without much specifics. It could be a matter of several people over history being rolled into one, but it is too recent to have lost that much and they are too technologically advanced to have list all that to oral history.”

“Computer run a search in Vulcan and Romulan databases for the last 300 years for the name Telas.”

Ben nodded. “We’ve all heard of key discoverers in the sciences, arts, and philosophy, but this is a change across all of them that just seems too quick, and far too broad.”

The computer displayed a rapidly changing readout of its search algorithm as it ran. Telas itself registered no matches, but the pronunciation - [təlɑs] - appeared as a potential sound change from [tʔlɑs], corresponding to the relatively common name of T’Las. Linguistic analysis of the samples taken from the planet projected that this was an entirely feasible shift over the time in play, especially given dominant phonology in the largest dialect spoken.

OOC: Just a clarification? There were no mentions of the name on JUST the alien planet or everywhere? I was about to ask if any of those mentions of T’Las (on other planets) appeared before the cultural sift on the planet and if any were listed as missing/disappearing.

IC: While the name did not appear previously on the planet, Vulcan records indicated six officers named T’Las listed as MIA between the years of 2140 and 2160 - all of them assigned to various exploratory ships.

“Well, that’s one for the books…” he started. “A name that’s been used by Vulcans appears abruptly in use on a planet in the delta quadrant.”

“Computer pull up the last mission logs for those six ships,” Shedda requested.

They were all fairly routine, dry, mission reports of newly explored space. What did stick out was the mention in the S’tel’s report of statistically significant increases in theta-band radiation and gravimetric distortion, in the final 2 reports that were received by Vulcan High Command.

Ben had glanced at the reports on theta-band radiation, and looked at the XO. “I’ll leave that to you science folks,” he said with a smile.

Shedda stared at the screen while she though. “Well theta-bands radiation is a result of contaminated anti-matter byproducts. It can cause hallucinations in early stages of sickness and is also known to disrupt warp fields and sensors if found in large concentrations. A gravimetric distortion is a type of spatial anomaly that happens in association with various interstellar phenomena. They are a danger to spacecraft because they can trap the and expose them to high levels of gravimetric shear.” This wasn’t really her area of expertise though. She raised her eyes to the ceiling while in thought. Then she tapped her combadge. =/\=Lt Gorvk and Lt Kleason report to the computer science lab.=/\=

When they arrived, she introduced Ben to them. “Lt. Gorvk is our top chemist and Lt Kleason is our astrophysics specialist. We’re looking into the disappearance of the Vulcan ship S’tel. Her last two reports mentioned statistically significant increases in theta-band radiation and gravimetric distortion. Any ideas how that might have affected the ship’s disappearance? Or possibly brought them here to the Delta?”

Ben smiled and gave a short head nod as a greeting.

“Yes, ma’am,” Kleason replied. “Some classes of wormholes have been recorded to increase both of those, among other things, although any ship in the last century should have been able to detect more concrete indications. But it would certainly explain why they lost contact with their command.”

“Alright, I want you two to look further into the data and reports, and current information we have on the area the ship disappeared and see if you can extrapolate what might have happened.” Shedda looked at Ben. “I think it’s time to give the captain an update.”

Ben nodded. “Shall we go to the bridge?” he said, with a grin.

Shedda paused as she stood. “Computer. Run a probability algorithm. How likely is it that the changes on Molkas were influenced by the cultural philosophy of Vulcan and the teachings of Surak?”

“Initial cultural comparison results in a probability of 78%.”

After getting an answer from the computer she nodded to Ben and they left for the bridge.
