After her shift in Sickbay, Aerin changed into more casual clothing and made her way to the Lounge - looking for refreshment and hopefully some non-medical conversation. She collected her meal from the replicator - Chana Masala over rice - and made her way over to an empty table.

Shedda was enjoying a rare moment to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the lounge. She wasn’t eating anything, she just had a drink and between conversations she was reading an archeological journal. She saw a lone figure walk past, “Lt. Shaw. Join me?”

Aerin looked up at the sound of the XO’s voice. “Commander,” she replied with a bright smile, “I’d like that, thank you.” She placed her tray on the table and took a seat. “May I ask what you are studying?”

Shedda nodded over her coffee cup. “Of course. This is just archeological journals. I don’t get into the field much anymore, but I like to read up on all the things being discovered.”

“How are you settling in?”

The lounge doors slid open and a singular figure walked in… the CO. But what the vast majority of the crew present wasn’t prepared for was seeing him out of uniform and dressed in jeans, a black T-shirt , and a dark brown leather jacket. Conversation slowed and some started to stand up, to which Alex just smiled and shook his head and gestured for them to sit. “We’re all off duty, and I’m just here for a drink. Relax, everybody.” he said with a smile. He made his way to the bar, stopping here and there to talk to individuals. He asked about family, hobbies, experiments, and other things that only someone who was ingrained in the community of the crew would know. He then went to the bar and ordered a glass of scotch.

Shedda nodded towards Alex with a smirk. She empathized for him. As XO the crew was not as stand offish with her as they were with him, but they weren’t not as social with her as it had been when she was a lower ranked officer. Alex was a good captain though, and he didn’t hide in his quarters away from everyone.

Aerin did a bit of a double take at the CO before shaking her head and responding to the Commander’s question. “Pretty well I think,” she replied with a smile, “I always feel more at home in space than I do on the ground. Do you miss it? The fieldwork I mean?”

Mal’athar nodded, “Every day. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t give up what I do now, but I do miss the field work. Being outside, digging in the dirt, finding and piecing small bits of metal and pottery together. It’s a different kind of discovery than what is done in a lab.”

“I can imagine,” Aerin replied, “I am a very ‘hands on’ person myself. That’s one of the many reasons I chose a career in Nursing.”

“It is a taxing but rewarding profession. How are you settling in?” the XO asked as she picked up her water.

Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO

“I think I’m pretty well settled in now.” Aerin replied. “Sickbay is keeping me busy, but I am enjoying it.”

“That’s good. How are you settling in off duty? Out here, so far away from everything, it’s important to find something other than work.”

“I’ve definitely some work to do in that department, but now that I’ve found my stride it’s my next priority. Are there many social events on board? Concerts?”

Shedda nodded, “Lots. Concerts, parties, socials, book clubs, art classes, gardening events and competitions, parisi’s squares teams, and more sports than I can remember. There is a social calendar in the ship’s computer. There is always something going on.”

“I will have to have a look then, music has always been my escape. If you don’t mind my asking, what kind of off-duty activities do you enjoy?”

“Volleyball, track, martial arts, creative writing, historical movies. What about yourself?” Shedda asked. She caught the COs eye and waved him over if he was so inclined.

Cochrane inclined his head and held up a finger. He then turned and waited for his drink.

“I do a lot of reading, old folk and fairy tales are a favorite of mine. I also play the violin and dabble in singing and irish dance. As a child I was immersed in all things celtic due to my mother’s studies and a lot of it stuck.”

“Oh?” Shedda asked, “What did she study? Their culture in general or something specific?”

“She’s a Literary Historian. Her primary focus is celtic and comparative mythologies. As you can imagine that leads to a pretty deep understanding of the culture overall.”

“Mythologies and food are two huge parts of understanding a culture,” Shedda commented. “What about your father?”

“Might I intrude upon the conversation?” a voice said as the CO walked towards the table. He smiled at the two officers and then gestured to an empty chair? “Is this seat taken? Or will I be forced to endure the contents of this glass by myself?”

“Of course, Captain,” Shedda smiled and nodded toward the chair. “Join us. We were just discussing our hobbies.”

Aerin nodded at the CO with a smile, relieved to be able to steer the conversation away from her parentage, “Yes Captain, do join us. I’d love to hear about your hobbies.”

Cochrane took a seat and then said “Hobbies, hmm? Well… while I don’t get all the time to do it that I would like, I do play music. Several instruments. I try to start the day with at least ten minutes or so of playing. Helps set my mind in the right frame. What about you, Lieutenant?” he asked.

“Only one instrument here I’m afraid, my grandfather started teaching me the violin as soon as I could hold the bow. What do you play?” Aerin asked.
