Aerin stepped out of the Transporter Room and into the corridors of the Manhattan. She had a pretty good idea where she was going but glanced down at the map showing on her Padd just to be sure. She continued on her way giving a smile and nod to others as she passed them. The warmth in her expression gained her quite a few smiles and nods back in return. She entered Sickbay and made her way to the CMO’s office. She pressed the chime and waiting patiently (mostly) for a response.

Ben glanced up from the PaDD he was reading as the chime sounded. Placing down the copy of the medical report, “Chronometric Osteopathy and the Temporal Lobe: Why Time Travel Might Be Giving You a Headache”, he rubbed his head.

Spotting the Lieutenant through one of the windows to his office, he called out: “Come in!”

Aerin stepped briskly into the room and up to the CMO’s desk. Her gaze seemed to make a quick survey of the entire room in the few seconds it took. A keen observer would note that she was not one to miss much in her environment.

“Lt JG Aerin Shaw reporting in for duty, Sir,” she stated with a hint of mischief in her smile, “And that topic alone would be enough to give anyone a headache.”

OOC: If it wasn’t for her Starfleet Record and the slight point to her ears one would never guess she had any Vulcan heritage at all. She comes across as very animated. Also in case you didn’t get a chance to read her Bio, she is a Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, and Midwife with Advanced Practice training in Family, Peds, Neonatal, and Maternity Nursing.

“Ahh, welcome aboard.” Ben said, as he stood up from his desk. “And yes, whilst Professor Zavak from Ferenginar is an expert in the field, his writing is rather dry.” he said, chuckling. “Anyway, enough about this report; Starfleet Medical has been promising me a new nurse practitioner for some time, so it’s great to have you on board.” he said with a smile.

“I trust the journey through Event Horizon Station was uneventful?” he asked.

“Indeed,” she responded with a smile, “And I am quite pleased to be here. I’ve missed being in full time clinical practice.”

OOC: Records would show she spent the last three years as a clinical instructor in the Nursing Program at Starfleet Medical

“Ahh yes, I understand you were an instructor at Starfleet Medical. How did you find looking after the future of Starfleet?” he asked with a smile.

“Teaching was a new experience for me, one I must admit I found quite rewarding… It also was a good reminder that even with all our progress, some things never change.” She smiled, almost mischievously, “There is always a gap between acquiring the knowledge and gaining the ability to apply it. You can’t teach critical thinking in a classroom.”

“Indeed, whilst our tools, techniques and procedures may change, you still need to have the mind and an understanding of the basics to practice it.” he said with a smile. “I also imagine you had a bit of time for your own research whilst you were at Starfleet Medical?” he asked.

“Some,” Aerin replied with a smile. “Most of my research has been centered on the topic of Cultural Competence in Nursing Care. I think it’s important to remember that a person’s health involves more than just their biology. And you? Any interesting ongoing research projects?”

“Well, most of my research has been in xenoanthropathology; the study of the effects of xenopathogens on humans.” he explained, thinking back to his sister. “My younger sister was infected from some form of pathogen when we took shore leave on a planet that was being surveyed, and never fully recovered. I’m convinced there is a cure out there, it’s just a case of finding it.” he said, slightly saddened, but still holding a smile.

“Well I would be happy to assist in anyway I can, whether it’s participating in the research or taking some work of your plate to free up time so you can focus more on it,” Hayley responded with a gentle smile. Her eyes unfocused briefly as she thought of her elderly mother back on Earth. “I believe you will find that cure, love of family is a great motivator.”

“That’s very kind,” Ben said. “I am hoping our next mission will yield something that warrants closer inspection. The last CMO’s notes didn’t really mention much from previous missions.”

Aerin nodded in reply, “Well, like you said, it has to be out there somewhere. In the meantime, where would you like me to get started duty wise?”

Ben nodded. “It’s been a while since anyone got a decent grip on how we run Sickbay. I would like you to take a look, and see how we can make sure the crew is getting the best care.”

“I will do that Sir,” Aerin replied, “And I will report back to you once I’ve completed a review. Is that all for now?”

“Yes, that’s all for now.” he said. “And, of course, if I had a door to this office, it would always be open, so please pop in if you need anything.
