“A new post” Scott said to himself as he read through the standard transfer documents at Event Horizon Station. It was a new post for him, a chance to explore the cosmos and get first hand experience with the unknown. A grand adventure for his new ship, the USS Manhattan, designed specifically for deep exploration and assigned to the wilderness that was the Delta Quadrant. This was exciting!

Well

It would be for literally anyone else.

Scott read through the documents and started to walk towards the docking port at precisely 1.42 meters per second as he read through the specs on his new ship, “Type X sensors, that’s good. Oh, multiphasic scan capabilities, that’s useful.” He said to himself in a tone only rivaled by high school algebra teachers. He approached the docking port and found himself swept up in a grand sense of ennui as he walked through and onto the ship for the first time. Fellow crew members walked briskly to perform their duties as he made his way through to his quarters on deck 11 where he set down his bag in the empty room and looked around, it was plain, needed more beige, and he said to himself, “I think my kettles will go over there” he said looking towards a rather unremarkable table in the corner.

With a breath he turned and made his way to Deck 6 between labs one and two where he found the office of the Chief Science Officer. Scott had read up on the man, he was reported to be upbeat, optimistic, excitable, and really everything that Scott wasn’t. If Arthur was a pinch of jalapeno pepper, Scott was a bag of flour. He rang the bell and stood there, his expression neutral and humdrum.

“Come in,” Arthur called, engrossed in a report of the latest chemistry experiment. “How can I help you? And would you like a cup of coffee?” By the sounds of it, he’d probably already had several cups today.

Scott entered the room and looked at Arthur with an expression that conveyed the same interest one might have in plain granola as he moved his hand with the PaDD over towards him and said, “I’m Scott Smith, the Manhattan is my new post, and if the deck layout is correct you are my new Chief?” He said with the same tone one would read an encyclopedia article on the various styles of carpet weave.

After offering the PaDD he stood at attention and said plainly, “A glass of lukewarm water would be fine please”

–Scott Smith, Scientist–

“That’s correct,” Arthur confirmed with a laugh. “Lukewarm water it is.” He input the order into the replicator and handed the glass across to the Lieutenant. “Welcome aboard! You caught me right as I was finishing up my preparations for leave, but I plan to be back. So, what do you specialize in?”
