Sair nodded. “I think that would be perfect,” she said simply. “Dr. Hudson kindly is seeing to processes in Sickbay in preparation, and my father will take half back with him to Kobliad. We can release the rest as you suggested.” Sair almost smiled. “My mother will truly be galactic now. I’m sure even five years ago she would have rebelled agains the idea. Kobliad was her home and she was entirely devoted to the place. That hasn’t changed, but her perspective had.”

“All of us are part of the universal tapestry… no matter where we are.” Alex said. “And no matter what form we take.” He looked at Sair and the took a deep breath. “Now that we have discussed your mother… your father… your son… what about you? What can I do for you? You need but ask. I hope you know that.”

Sair met his gaze and said nothing for a long while. “I wish I knew,” she said softly. Ever since she told me she was in The Decline, I just went into a practical action mode. It almost feels like now that it’s over and I’ve stopped moving I’m frozen. I can make myself do things, especially for Koro, but the rest? I don’t know. Even the remembrance gathering feels like something we just do. I know better than most that my numbness is normal, but it makes it hard to gauge what I need or how I feel.”

Alex smiled softly and said “You don’t have to know that right now. Right now is just about feeling what you feel. Sort out the specifics later.” He sighed and said “You also don’t have to know what you need right now. But just know that if and when you do know you need something, I will be here. Anytime. Understood?” and he smiled at her.

She reached out and rested a hand on his arm, weariness etched into her features. “Thank you, Alex. I appreciate your support through all of this. Obviously not right now, but soon though, I think a wander through that holodeck program of yours might be nice. And I do know that my father was still interested in playing with you, if you’re up for it. It might be a good distraction for him, though as best I can tell, even though he too is grieving, he’s had longer to prepare. He has a level of peace about her death that is… enviable,” she said with a small chuckle. Sair didn’t begrudge her father at all- his grief was always going to be different than hers- but she did hope to find that same peace at some point.

“Tell him the opportunity to play with him is something I look forward to with great anticipation.” Alex said. “He may feel free to contact me at any time and we can set up a time. I will even give him access to the holodeck program as well. Maybe you both could find some relief in it.”

A soft smile touched her face. “That would be nice, I think. It’s been awhile since I’ve been to a place like that with my father. Actually, I can’t remember the last time as an adult. We went on a couple day trips with Koro before I left for the Manhattan, but work was, well… work.”
Sair shifted her gaze out at the stars and the great void that still had a magical power over her. “She devoted her entire life to caring for others. Never once complained about any of it. And when I told her I wanted to switch into mental health she just looked at me and said ‘I wondered when you might make a change’.” Under normal circumstances, Sair might have gotten teary at this point, but that wasn’t where she was at right now. “She knew how unhappy I was, and even though it took me all the way out here, she really did seem to understand why I made such a big change yet again.” Sair turned her head back to Alex. “I wouldn’t say I’m happy here. Not quite the way I had hoped, or maybe not yet, but I’m definitely not unhappy, if that makes sense.” She had those difficult months without Koro after she first arrived but then her mother brought Koro. She had also brought tension and the news of The Decline, so the way Sair saw it, she hadn’t truly had a chance to find her footing here long enough to find the sort of happiness she had bene looking for.

“That will come.” Alex said with a soft and understanding smile. “The Manhattan is unique… and not just in it’s location.” He looked out the window at the stars streaking by. “It is a living, breathing thing in many ways. And like any other living thing, it takes time to get to know it. But once you do; she is a good friend. But it takes time to get into her rhythm. Don’t let it frustrate you. It will come, I’m sure of it.”

His words settled over her and Sair took them in and eventually nodded. “It’ll be a strange transition once my father goes back to Kobliad. It’ll just be Koro and I and it’s never just been him and I. My parents have always been around. I knew when I decided to be a single parent that it would be hard at times, and I know I have support here, but it is different.” She paused and considered her child, breaking into a soft smile. “But he does seem happy here, so that is a comfort.”
