Kaia let the child go ahead, standing and following after him.

The attendant thought for a moment. “Well, we’ve got all sorts of critters. We’ve got goats, an chickens, and some borkyn, and akae, and…” he continued, listing critters from about ten different planets. All were soft, fluffy, and generally good tempered animals that would do well in a petting zoo.

“An akae? Really?!” It was the only one he knew of given it was one from his homeworld. Koro was going to hurry off to find the small fluffy-tailed animal but he stopped, a puzzled expression on his face as he looked at Kaia. “What’s a got? A goot?” The word escaped his best attempts at pronunciation though he seemed to do pretty well with Federation Standard when he attempted the language.

“Goat. It’s am animal from Earth. They like to climb all over, will eat anything, and have little horns on their heads,” the attendant explained. They pointed in the direction of the goat pen. “The akae are just past them as well!”

Kaia gestured in that direction. “Would you like to go see the goats and the akae?”

Koro nodded fervently. “Yes, please!” he said, though he quieted his voice despite his excitement. Loud noises sometimes scared him and he didn’t want to scare the animals.

“Do you have a favourite animal, Kaia?” he asked as they moved through to the other pens.

Kaia considered the question while they walked towards the goat pens. “Well, I think my favourite animal is probably.. a vek. They’re really friendly, with huge ears and flaps between their legs that let them glide between the trees. Some of them are bigger than me, and some are as little as that bunny you met. My people keep them as pets, and sometimes they have jobs that they do to help, like guiding the blind, helping hunters catch food, and helping herd Esh’ut flocks.”

Koro listened with wide eyes. “I like the sound of them! And they can glide? Really!?”

He spotted the goats and crouched, peeking through the slates of the fencing. “What are the nubs on their heads?”

“Most of the animals that live in the jungles where I grew up can either glide or climb trees. We build our homes in the tree-tops,” Kaia explained, then they reached the goats. “Those are horns. Goats like to bang their heads against things, and the horns protect their brains.”

A strange expression swept over his small face and it was like he couldn’t decide whether to laugh or be horried. “Why do they bang their heads? Doesn’t that hurt?”

“I don’t know why they do it. But I know that the horns protect their little heads from getting hurt. They’re like built-in helmets,” Kaia replied.

Koro continued to peer at the goats. “Can we touch them?” He knew he could touch some of the animals here but wasn’t sure which ones.

There was another staff member. “You can feed them, if you want to. We’ve got carrots.” They handed a carrot to the child and instructed him on how to hold it, and Kaia took a carrot as well. One of the smaller goats wandered over, bleating for a moment before it noticed the yummy carrots and made a beeline for the snacks. It ate Kaia’s carrot first, and she pet its head, showing Koro what to do.
