The new COS had been on board for a bit now. He seemed to be doing well, and Shedda saw him frequently on the bridge and around the ship. However, she thought it was probably time to check in and make sure he was settling in and see if there was anything he department needed. She made her way through the decks and stopped at the security office and stepped inside. “Is Cmdr Fayth available?”

Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO

“Yes, ma’am, he’s in his office right now. You caught him at the right time, his next patrol is scheduled in half an hour.” Responded Ensign Nickelson, a very respectful young security officer. “Go on ahead. I’m sure he’ll appreciate the visit.”

The commander nodded, “Thank you, Nickelson.” She went down the small hall and pressed the chime and waited.

Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO

“Enter,” Eilah said. He already knew it was the Commander, he could sense her. But when she entered, he still smiled and said, “Ah, Commander. What do you need?”

The XO stepped in just far enough to let the door close. “Just stopped by to see how you’re settling in, Cmdr. It’s been a couple of weeks, and I know it can take a bit to get the feel of a new department.” Mal’athar was easy to read. She had no natural barriers at all which was typical of Orions. There was no other purpose than to see how he was doing and if there was anything she could assist with.

Fayth didn’t even really intend to read her. People like Mal’athar gave him a hint of an idea at what it must be like to be his sister. It came as natural as breathing and with absolutely zero boundaries preventing it he almost couldn’t help it at all. “It’s going well. You’ve got a good group of officers here.” Eilah smiled and shrugged. “There’s a little more settling in to do, but overall things are looking good.”

“Is there anything you or your department needs? Any of your officers? They’ve done well, but they were without a DH for awhile.” Shedda wasn’t just going through motions, she cared about the crew, and looked out for them.

Eilah could tell, not just in her thoughts and emotions but in her actions. He respected that. It made him respect her as his superior all the more. “Time to train our newest officers, which I can organize myself. Upgrades to our armoury, maybe. Some of our weapons are out of date or not properly functional.”

Faulty weapons was a problem. “Do you have a list? We have a new requisition going out in 3 days. I can put whatever you need on it. Takes about 3 weeks to get it here. Longer if it’s not on Event Horizon. I will check with the quarter master to see what we already have.”

“What do you need for training? The gym, holodeck? We can block out reserved time for that.”

“I can get one together by the end of today,” Eilah promised. “The holodeck is best. I like to use it to manufacture targets that ‘shoot’ back. Makes it more realistic, which makes it more useful.”

A mini PaDD appeared in her hand and she tapped on it, “Alright, how many days, which shifts, how many hours at a time?”

Eilah checked his schedules and listed days and times off to her. “Two hours at a time. Any more than that and you risk exhausting people. Or turning their brains to mush. I save the longer lessons for more experienced officers.”

Mal’athar nodded silently as she entered the information. She didn’t ask him to repeat, having gathered and sorted the information in a unique way that allowed her to remember what he had told her. When she finished, she swiped her finger across the PaDD and the schedule appeared on his screen. “Will that work?”

Fayth read over the schedule. “Yes, this will do fine. Thank you, Commander.” He said and smiled.

“That’s what I’m here for,” the XO smiled slightly. “You’re welcome. Is there anything else I can do?”

Eilah smiled and shook his head. “No, otherwise the department looks good. Unless there’s something you need from me.”
