After being discharged from sickbay, Arthur hurried to his final check-in, the counselor’s office. As he waited outside the door for his appointment, the CSO rolled back and forth on his heels, anxious to be done with the red tape and able to get back into the labs. He mentally went through his checklist of common questions when onboarding and his answers to each, and then, deciding that he was prepared, he rang the chime.

“Enter,” a lyrical voice sounded through the door comm.

Inside, Sair Songz was sitting on the floor in the middle of her office, actual pieces of paper spread out in front of her, each with rather colourful scribbles of various scenes and appearing as if a child drew them. While she was used to walk-ins, she gave up trying to be prepared for them and just went about her day. Fairly tall for many humanoid species (even sitting), the Kobliad had straight pink coloured hair that fell to her chin. Her light brown eyes were deeply set amongst the prominent vertical facial ridges that split her hairline, intersected by thinner horizontal ridges. As she looked up, her base expression gave her something of a stern look. Most definitely on the lean side, the counsellor wore simple black trousers and a dark blue tunic that she had adopted in her previous stint on a Starfleet facility: her version of a uniform. She did have a standard combadge though.

A large area rug in muted blues, greys and greens spanned half of the therapy area in front of her desk and she had set a small round coffee table in front of a small sofa and two arm chairs, all in a blue-grey colour. Behind that was a simple desk, with two basic chairs in front and a pale wooden shelving unit to the left by the replicator.

Next to the door was a stone sculpture that was half the height of the door. Carved out of white dolomite, it was a miniature replica of the giant tree that was in the lobby of the Assembly Complex in Kobliad’s capital. The tree had a wide trunk with the appearance of a thick bark and was easily deciduous with sweeping branches with teardrop shaped leaves. Carved around the trunk of the tree were arms with hands seeming to hold the tree and they wound themselves up the trunk.

“Hello, please come on in and tell me how I can help. And don’t mind me, I’m just about done here.” Sair asked, gesturing to the seats near her.

Arthur strolled into the room as the door opened, acknowledging the offered seat and sitting down. “Hello! Your room decor is beautiful,” he noted. “I’m just here for my boarding psych check-in, Lt. Commander Arthur Flynn? I just got aboard.”

“Welcome to the Manhattan. I’m Sair Songz,” she said, as she pulled one page to the side and gathered the rest into a pile. She got up and set them on her desk, before joining him in the sitting area.

“So, tell me about you.”

“Well, I’ve been on starships just about my entire life - my family’s Starfleet back several generations. I guess it really didn’t surprise anyone when I applied to the Academy in high school. Since then, I’ve just been chasing and trying to understand the unknown!”

She smiled. “What part appeals to you the most about that exploration of the unknown?” There were often so many layers to such a career and Sair found it actually interesting what pieces drew people to the stars the most.

“Hmm, that’s a good question,” Arthur considered, thinking for a minute. “I’m not really sure what specifically - all of it? I love getting to learn new things, why I’m in Science I guess.”

“Well, we have plenty of opportunities for that out here. How do you feel about being in the Delta Quadrant?”For many it wasn adjustment, but since he’d been on ships his whole life he might hav a very different perspective on the matter.

“It’s certainly different, but good different. This is the part of space nobody in Starfleet’s been in before, where I can learn new things and discover new places,” Arthur replied, grinning.

“Absolutely,” she said with a nod. “And we have already, both since I’ve been here and well before I arrived.”

Sair crossed one leg over her knee. “Are there any challenges you are anticipating being out here so far away?”
