Arthur stepped off the shuttle lightly, luggage in hand. He paused a moment as he stepped onto the deck, taking in the ship as fully as he could. Finally, somewhere he fit well. “Excuse me,” he asked, approaching an ensign nearby, “could you by chance point me in the direction of the CSO’s quarters?” The ever-present smile never left his face, and after receiving directions (Deck 4, evidently), he thanked the man and headed off to the turbolift to deposit his belongings, eager to get started.

Before he got out of the shuttle bay an Orion woman, in command red, with three solid gold pips on her collar entered. “Cmdr Flynn. Welcome aboard the Manhattan. I’m Cmdr Mal’athar. How was your trip through the worm hole?” There were grins and a few exchanged credits. There were always bets on who would meet the new officer’s first: Cpt Cochrane or Cmdr Mal’athar. For once Cmdr Mal’athar beat Cochrane to the bay.

“Glad to be here! It was beautiful,” Arthur noted, taking in the crew’s activity with mild interest but not deeming it worthy of immediate investigation. “After I complete my boarding, of course, how can I help?” He grinned, standing with more weight on his left foot and fingers drumming on his other leg. “I can’t wait to work with this crew. The Manhattan has quite the exciting reputation, after all.”

“We came across an interesting pair of binary stairs last year. Some interesting effects on the planets in orbit. We didn’t have time to do more than send a probe. We will be arriving back in a week. Then we have a stop at an unclaimed planet that we will be surveying. The exobiologists are very excites to get down there. We just finisned surveying a very young nursery nebula. And I believe the quantum physics lab just had a break through, but I won’t spoil it for them.”

“Oh, interesting,” Arthur said, “I can’t wait to get up there!”

Mal’athar waved towards the shuttlebay doors and followed him out. “What led you to your specialty, Cmdr.”

“Well, I grew up in a Starfleet family, so wanting to learn more has always been a value I’ve had, and the Academy only helped that to grow,” he explained. “I find theory more interesting than what’s known, normally, so it’s not surprising I wanted to be here, where a lot of what we do is learning new, unexplored information.”

“Mmm I lucked out in my studies that way. Anthropology requires a lot of known and a lot of theory. Of course my father would say I specialized in that and archeology because I like to play in the dirt.” The Cmdr grinned, a bright white smile against her green lips and laughed quietly. “Would you like a tour of the ship? Or just directions to the nearest science lab?” Shedda understood all too well. The draw of the unknown and new discoveries was often more pressing than the mundane details of learning to navigate a new ship.

“As interesting as the tour sounds, I think I want to get acquainted with the labs first,” Arthur laughed. “I’ll go exploring later and figure out where everything is, if that’s alright?”

The Commander grinned. “That’s perfectly alright. The bulk of your labs are on decks 4 thru 8. Your quarters are also on deck 4 with the rest of the senior staff. Your office is on deck 6 between General Labs 1 and 2. Additional labs are in the stardrive section near engineering and the main computer core.” The Commander produced a PaDD and handed over. “Being a Science vessel dictates most of our missions. You and I meet with the captain every Tuesday to discuss plans for what and where we go. Baring other direct orders. This co tains a list of current objectives, your staff roster, and other pertinent information. I am also just a comm call away if you have questions or need anything.” She held out her hand, “Welcome aboard, Cmdr.”

Arthur accepted the PADD, scanning over the data quickly with plans to go over it in detail later. “I’m glad to be here, ma’am.” He shook the XO’s hand and continued on his course to the lift, ready to get started on exploring the vast expanse of unknown space.
