“Oh yes,” Songz said with a nod. ‘There’s a whole grove, plus some on The Hill. And that’s not counting the fruit trees in the experimental food area. I mean, they’re not huge or anything, it’s only two decks tall, but my son loves playing in the grove by the pond. Loves all the sticks he finds,” she said with a laugh.

“Sticks are great they can be useful in so many ways. Though using sticks to smack older brother’s in shins only works once.” Devin said with a laugh, kids and sticks had to many combinations. A wizard’s staff for one game, a sword in another, to keep your balance along a hike, so many great memories combined with a good stick. Plus smacking her brother or one of his annoying friends with it that one time was worth the scolding and grounding she’d gotten.

“I wouldn’t know,” Sair said with a smile. “So I’ll have to take your word for it.”

She pondered how to proceed next. “I see my role, especially during a boarding eval, as being a guide and a sounding board. Unless there is something specific you’ve been working on with a counsellor at your last assignment, most people just need someone to touch base with. So with that in mind, is there anything else you’re curious about in terms of the ship and crew? Or anything you want to discuss before you go get settled in?”

“Not overly fond of Spiders and learned hard way that I had an allergy to spider bites. Working on it but they still give me the creeps.” Devin said and every time she said spider she shuddered, she could all too clearly remember how it felt to have that swarm of spiders crawling over her as they found places to bite her. Not something she ever wanted to live through again if she could avoid it.

Songz nodded. “Phobias are definitely something we can work on together if that would be useful. What are you doing currently to help?” Phobias could be complex and take a long time to tackle but many could be lessened in their severity and impact. While it wasn’t all that likely that Kindle would come across spiders on a starship, away team duty could be unexpected, especially for a security officer.

“I either step wide around them when I see them or if I have to walk near where they are I do so carefully, afterwards when I am alone I kick a few pillows around until I feel better.” Trying words to feel better about having been close to spiders just doesn’t work for her. “Had a friend make some pastries that looked like spiders once, I dumped the plate they gave me in the trash and told them to grow up.” It had not been her first choice but she had handled it well all things considered. She had considered in hitting Garren Holmes for the spider pastries, but doing so over a baked good was over kill. So she trashed the creepy looking pastries even if there had been her favorite chocolate and even peppermint interlaced in them. She told Garren to grow up and walked out of the room before she did or said something she might regret later.
