SnipThe core did power up with a soft glow that stuttered at first but held. As the subsystems slowly ran through a boot diagnostic there looked to be a significant mix of red, amber and green marks, with the green in the minority. Elements of =^= Subsystem failure =^= and =^= Memory Core 12A error =^= and the likes. Distinct computer core corruption from a century (plus possible tertiary damage from whatever happened to the ship). Elements could be extracted and the amber regions possibly could be recovered. Red areas .. anyone’s guess.
Devin blinked at the corpse, she couldn’t tell if it was human or something else the decay was enough that it was up to medical science to figure it out at least from her perspective. She wasn’t thrilled at seeing the dead but she wasn’t unused to it either. It was a startling sight but not enough to upset her stomach or anything. If it had been arachnid or something close she might have said a word or two that wasn’t quite professional but she would have recovered quickly enough in most cases. “Sir found a corpse. Not certain but it looks likes it’s been a while since it’s been here.”

OOC: i can edit any of that, just let me know.
Eilah stopped with a jump as he came upon the body himself. “Ah, that’s… not what I expected.” He gave the corpse a disgusted look, but didn’t seem too disturbed. “Any ideas why they died?” He asked, shining his flashlight at it.
~ Fayth, COS
Devin eyed the corpse and shook her head, “Could be a case of what didn’t kill them, could have been dehydration, exposure, they could have had a stroke or something. Medical scans might solve it but all I can offer is ideas.” Devin didn’t add any smart arse commentary, it wasn’t the right time or place and she wasn’t about to be that disrespectful of the dead. Folks of her previous postings would have made quiet remarks to joke open coms or not. She never called them out because they generally out ranked her and she didn’t borrow trouble unless it was pay back for a prank war.

Bump for GM
Wookiee“Given the state of the ship, I highly doubt it was natural causes or dehydration.” Eilah said, glancing at Kindle. “But, you are right, Medical will know for sure. I’ll comm the ship.” He said and tapped his badge. =/\= “Fayth to Manhattan, we’ve got a dead one here. Could use the doc to determine cause of death. =/\=

Cochrane’s voice came over the comms. =/\= Scan for possible contaminants and then bag and tag if they are clean, Commander. Bring them back here for the autopsy. =/\=
Cochrane, COScans would not show anything that might be a contaminant. After that long in essentially a vacuum, beyond being possessed, there was nothing harmful.
- WookieeOOC: New Year’s Bump .. Gene
Shedda was keeping track over the comms and left Kaia and Sorvk to work. She called ops and had a bodybag beamed over. She took it with her up to the bridge area. “I heard there was a body,” she said as she came up behind Fayth and glanced over his shoulder and the floating body. “Poor soul. Well let’s get him scanned and prepped for transport.”
Cmdr. Mal’athar, Executive Officer
Not long after the body bag was beamed over. The act of actually putting said body - even though the individual was a dwarf - was a challenge. Even being careful, during the process one arm snapped off with a small spray of dust and bits. However, that said, that grisly job was soon done.
- WookieeKaia examined the computer core with a slightly disappointed, but still determined expression on her face. “Welp… I’m not really a computer specialist, but I know enough about them. Let’s get working on this…” She plugged a PaDD into the core and started downloading what she could from the green and amber sections. It’d be much easier to examine the data when they were back in the safety of the Manhattan.
Kaia, CE
While the download began Kaia’s mind was ticking in the idea that the computer core on this small craft (relatively) could be removed with some elbow grease and time.
WookieeA voice crackled across the away team’s comms channel.
=^= Hudson to Away Team. We’re ready to receive the body whenever you are. Let us know, and we’ll beam them to sickbay. =^=
The away team would be forgiven for thinking the doctor was somewhat excited; after all, up until now, he had just been watching them from the bridge.
OOC: Tie in with the sickbay post.
Lt. Hudson
Chief Medical Officer=/\= “Ready to transport, Hudson.” =/\= Eilah replied, once the body was indeed ready. He turned to Kindle. “Let’s keep going… And let’s hope that’s the worst thing we find.”
Lt. Cmdr. Eilah Fayth
Chief of SecurityThe transporter chief heard the order over the open comms and the body disappeardd in a swirl of lights.
Mal’athar looked around. “What do you think cmdr? Damage from floating through space aimlessly or some kind of fight?” Shedda swept her tricorder around looking for any signs of a smuggling hold or secret compartment.
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
Kaia’s foot tapped on the floor as she waited for the download. The engineer glanced around to see if there was anyone in range, but it seemed they’d all gone off to investigate other areas.
Kaia, CE
Devin kept her mouth shut since the question was asked to Fayth, she was looking around as she wondered what else they would find though she really hoped there wouldn’t be too many more bodies, but not finding them left more questions on where they could have gone, by who, or what means? It was a form of balance there should be more somewhere. It was just a matter of finding them or solving what had taken, moved, or whatever else the solution turned out to be.
Devin Kindle, SO
One of the cargo holds - there were principally two of them - were full of racks floor to ceiling. A portable ladder was attached to the bulkhead wall next to the door. Some were wire mesh enclosed, some held trays both enclosed and open, some were shelves and some crates of various sizes. Those crates which were on shelves were floating about the narrow spaces between the racks. Rock and core samples floated about the room - assuming they were on shelves to begin with that had not been enclosed - and that made one feel one was walking through an asteroid field.
- WookieeShedda looked around, “The science folks would enjoy taking a look at this.” She called ops and had several transporter tags and crates sent over. She looked at Fayth and Kindle. “Keep looking, I’m going to tag this and have it beamed to the Manhattan to look at.” She began searching each crate and then tagging it for transport back to the ship. Then she went to work on containing the flying asteroid field. Her purpose was twofold - one for study, but it also moved things out of the way so they could search the hold better.
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
It was time consuming work but on the upside it was a job that showed distinct progress as the floating rocks and samples diminished and the crates disappeared from the hold. At the far end, toward the portion of hold that had the bay door, they could see that a portion of the hull and door was crumpled and torn, blackened like a nasty bruise on the skin of the ship. Either something had hit it or an energy weapon from outside but this portion of the hull was distinctly compromised. This ventured along the decking of the hold where the deck plates were buckled and warped for up to a third of the hold itself.
OOC: Was there something in particular you are looking for?
- WookieeOOC: Not anything in particular, but smugglers tend to hide things, and evil GMs like surprises. So covering our basis. Oh and looking for the illusive hidden smuggler’s hold that Cochrane told us to make sure we find (if there is one). :)
OOC: Thought so :)Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
In the hunt Shedda nearly tripped, certainly stumbled over one bit in the decking that was buckled. What made it worse was that the toe of her boot initially jammed in the crack in the decking making her have to get down on one knee to try to pull it loose without damaging the suit and compromising the atmosphere. The curiosity was that there was a stone jammed in there as well but it was one that was more jammed from the inside rather than the outside where she was.
“Fayth, Kindle, over here. I think I have stumbled on the smuggler’s hold.” She managed to get her boot loose without tearing anything. “Looks like there some items wedged in there from underneath. What do you think?”
Looking closer it did look like a compartment underneath, though there was no perceptible way of gaining entry to it - if there was the damage to the decking essentially jammed it shut. After some time of looking a clever mechanism was found though it was also irreparably damaged. Any further entry would need to be cut through.
- Wookiee=/\=Lt. Kaia, we need you in the cargo hold. We need some flooring, cut through with a plasma torch. We may have found out smuggler’s hold.=/\=
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
Kaia set aside the work in progress that was the computer core and made her way over to the cargo hold. “Commander,” she nodded at Mal’athar before examining the floor plating and nodding thoughtfully. “While I work on this, I had a thought. The computer Core is pretty small. I could probably uninstall it and bring it back to the Manhattan with us. Would give me access to a science team, and more importantly, more time and resources to try and extract the data.”
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS ManhattanShedda nodded. “Good idea. You will have access to reliable power. No need to stay here if it can be done on the ship.”
OOC: Cross-posted from the autopsy thread:
=^= Hudson to Bridge and Away Team. The deceased individual was a 50 year old human, but time of death was around 140 years ago. =^= he reported, wondering what had caused the individual to be in the Delta quadrant at a time when humanity was just starting to explore solar systems local to Earth.
Lt. Hudson
Chief Medical Officer=/\=Interesting. Lt. Kaia is going to bring the computer core back. Hopefully the navigation logs are intact.=/\=
Cmdr. Mal’athar, XO
Devin was curious about the old man and how he’d died, but she was more curious about what could be hidden in the smuggler’s hold. She looked at Kaia with a cheeky grin, “Would you like some help or would more hands just get in the way?” she asked lightly, she wanted to know but not at the cost of being a problem.
Ens Kindle
Security officerKaia nodded gratefully at the XO, smiling at the fact that she’d just… made a suggestion and it had been accepted as the new plan without question. She supposed that was the benefit of experience.
“It’s a little finicky, especially in a bad environment like this…” Kaia set up the tools of her trade, assembling the specialized phaser. “Don’t worry though, this shouldn’t take too long.” Kaia began to tap the edges of the deck plating, searching for weak spots as well as the edges of the hollow space underneath, then started cutting key locations. If she didn’t have to cut the entire perimeter, she wouldn’t cut the entire perimeter.
Lieutenant Kaia
Chief Engineer USS ManhattanThe whole perimeter wasn’t needed. The decking was thicker in this area and cold. Melting bubbling plating expanded out from the cut, cooling rapidly like a swift cooling erupting volcano. The area wasn’t even that large. One meter deep and three meters to each side. The plating in zero gravity moved away, but with care. It may move easy but it had a significant mass in the event it shifted suddenly.
There were a half dozen loose rocks that looked as though they had been in a wire mesh bucket that had at one time had a leather or other mesh over it. That had long since deteriorated in the vacuum freeing the rocks within. Three were samples and three were core samples. What else that was there was a metal chest. Square with a metal mesh around, riveted and with what looked to be an inbuilt lock. It was bolted to the decking underneath. It itself was battered and old looking and was half a meter tall and wide and a meter long.
Mal’athar grabbed the samples and mesh basket as they floated out and moved them to a crate and secured them inside. “Lt,” she said to Kaia, “Do you think you can get that chest loose?”
=/\=Captain, we found the smugglers hold. It’s not very big. Had some rock and core samples in it and a very battered old chest. Lt Kaia Is working on getting it loose.=/\=
Devin nodded and glanced around there was still unexplored sections to secure, “I’m going to keep looking around if you need something give a holler.” she said with a cheeky grin before she turned and started down the next section they had not gone over yet. Devin was walking carefully and being mindful of her surroundings. She hated just standing around and not feeling useful and she figured checking out the rest was a good idea. There might be more to find or it might just be empty. Either way she was at least moving and not feeling like a lump on a log as her father would say.
Ens Kindle
Security officerKindle on the other hand, in the opposite bay, would find a lovely mix of survey equipment lining the walls in cabinetry along with a quad vehicle and small trailer. Both were chained to the deck. It was battered, well used, still muddy in places, scraped and rather modified by the look of it. One one side was painted AINE definitely by hand in dark paint contrasting with the scuffed grey sides of the quad.
