IC: An Orion woman in command red approached her with a welcoming smile. “En Fitzgerald. Welcome aboard the Manhattan. I’m Cmdr Mal’athar,” the woman offered her hand. Shedda read all personnel reports of the people who came aboard. The woman had a solid background despite her lengthy leave of absence. And a demotion in rank, at her own request. It was interesting. Then again, everyone who came to the Manhattan was interesting and had stories. Sometimes they shared and sometimes they didn’t. “How was your trip out?”

Anna smiled and took the hand. “It was fine, Commander. Nice to meet you. I wasn’t expecting a welcoming party; certainly not the XO.”

The woman smiled. “Captain Cochrane and I always make it a point to meet everyone who comes on board. Out here, we are all we have. We’re a community and everyone is a part of it. It can be hard to be so far away from everything that is familiar.” She walked toward the lift. “If you don’t mind telling me, what drew you to accept a position all the way out here?”

Anna smiled. The Commander certainly had a way of cutting through the pleasantries and getting straight to the meat very quickly.

“The fact that it’s literally the other side of the universe, away from everything familiar, was part of the draw for me, Commander,” Anna said as she walked with the other woman to the lift. “I thought I was going to be spending the next two decades of my life doing one thing, but as it turns out, it’s going to have to be something entirely different. I’m looking to make a clean break with the life I thought I was going to have. This seemed like the perfect place to do it.”

“It is.” The XO agreed. “This is a good place to start down new paths. You really get the chance to discover yourself and the universe out here.” They stepped off the lift. “We are, of course, a science vessel, but are Medical facility is top of the line. I won’t spoil that introduction for Dr. Hudson.” She made a turn down a side corridor. “Do you have any hobbies ensign?”
