Her stormy grey-green eyes took him in critically and she certainly didn’t return the smile as she shook his hand. Though she was on the slimmer side for her height, she was stronger than she looked. “Nothing for me,” Faye said simply. Such short notice? I damn well requested the meeting and you ordered me here. Jerk.

Taking a seat in one of the chairs at the desk, Faye adopted the most civil expression she could. “Well, since I asked if I could fill you in sooner rather than later, it did seem appropriate.”

Leaning back slightly, she forced herself to relax a bit. Not only did it convey body language he would interpret in a socially constructive way, but she had to remember that she had other things she needed to accomplish during this meeting. “How much were you told about my assignment to the Manhattan?” she asked simply.

Cochrane chuckled a bit as he took his seat behind the desk. “You did indeed request it, Lieutenant. And I was happy you did so. I asked you here as I did to let you know I knew that this was an important conversation to have. I also didn’t know if someone else had you tied up with something, so I thought it best to add the ‘immediately’ part so you could have that as an excuse.” he said with a slight wink. “I mean, I’d hate to have people thinking I was blowing them off my first day… I usually wait a week before I start that.” he added with a wink. “Especially since you took the time to send me that message instead of just walking up to the door and knocking. That’s happened enough today, actually.” he said with a slight sigh.

Yes, and usually people who get a message, reply with one, since that would convey the same or similar tone. Faye suppressed the eye roll well though, even as her mind wanted to continue down the path of annoyance it was on.

“Now, with regards to your question. I was given a short briefing as to your work, but was expressly told that you would be the one to give me the full briefing. Actually, I asked that you be one. I’d rather hear from the person on the ship who is doing the actual work then get some bureaucrats take on what it is they think you are doing. And that this is all classified, of course. So… what do I need to know about what you are doing? And how can I help you get it done?”

At least with this Faye could focus on the details and ignore her irritation at the person before her. “Well, basically, I’m camped out in Computer Science Lab two where I am building, rebuilding and testing encryption and decryption protocols. Given our location in the Delta Quadrant, Starfleet Command is keen on following the Manhattan’s progress as we do what we do and explore. I’ll be responsible for not only the security of our computer cores and library but making sure all the info we transmit back to Starfleet via the relay system gets there intact. I’ll be experimenting with some compression methods as well, but whether we deviate from the standard or not will depend entirely on how my experiments go. Some of the work and my equipment is understandably sensitive and therefore considered classified for the time being. Where you can help is to make sure that that stays that way and I’m able to do my job without interference.”

Cochrane listened as she spoke. “So how will you account for the signal disruption of unfamiliar compression logarithms when the signal reaches the subspace relay networks? I mean, that may end up giving you false incompatibility flag when it hits, right? Or do you have a particular frequency assigned for the project that has been cleared before hand?” he asked inquisitively. It was obvious he was interested, and had at least a rudimentary knowledge of the subject. While he was no Scientist or Engineer by any means, he wasn’t entirely blind to the other disciplines. And knowing if there was a frequency he should’t step on in the course of the mission may help keep the project moving along.

Her eyes were told the story going on in her head where she calculated how best to convey something. At least she had always bene able to do that if not hold her tongue when her emotions got the better of her. “In part. There is an approved frequency and I will be testing with it extensively. I also have some… special pieces of hardware that will be, if they work properly, able to counter any issues that one would expect with us sending data through not only a relay but a wormhole. It’s part tweaking what we know, and the the rest is purely experimental.” She held up a hand as if anticipating a protest. “I do have plans to double transmit things, one through normal system processes, and also with the enhanced version. I can compare the data that I’m given from Command in return and analyze and weak from there.” In truth, this was really exciting and it showed in the micro-expressions on her face. She was finally doing something worth if her notable IQ and multitude of skills.
