With the new Chief Medical Officer arriving recently, Kaia knew it was a good idea to get in and make sure he was familiar with her medical needs. Not every doctor knew where the hearts were on her species, and she didn’t want that to become an issue. Or any of hte other things. So, here she was, in Sickbay, waiting for her appointment.

Ben looked up as Kaia entered, a hint of recognition in his eyes. “Ensign Kaia, isn’t it?” He motioned her towards a nearby biobed. Whilst he hadn’t met Kaia previously, he had been getting to grips with the crew files, and recognised her from the image on her file.

“I must admit, with the many species aboard the USS Manhattan, I’m still getting to grips with the diverse anatomies. I’ve gone over your file in preparation for our appointment, but you’ll be my first hands-on experience with a Galdori. So, whilst I hope I am familiar with your species on paper, I would your patience and guidance as we go through the medical.” Ben said with a smile.

“First off, are there any specific needs or concerns that you would like to discuss so that I am able to provide the best care for you?”

“Calling my species Galdori is like saying your species is Earthling,” Kaia said with a laugh, examining the biobed for a brief moment before using her tail as an anchor point to hoist herself up to the high platform. “I’m a Raka. The way we say it is that I’m from the Raka Tribe but that’s just semantics. The species is called Raka.” She grinned, amused.

Ben grimaced slightly, and made a mental note to correct the records that were on file. He was about to apologise, but Kaia continued just as he was about to open his mouth.

“As for specific needs and concerns. I have an entirely unique blood type, I think the previous CMO kept a small amount of it stored (pre-replicated or donated by myself) in a cooler in case of emergencies. If I ever come in complaining of gastrointestinal distress, it’s likely because someone in the galley put too much fibre in a meal and forgot to make note of it on the menu, best solution is 20ccs of (insert sci-fi drug here), it helps me evacuate without causing too much more damage to my body but I’ve not been authorized to self-prescribe. There’s the hearts situation,” she tapped her chest a little lower than one would assume the heart’s position to be, then again a little higher (and also on the right side of her chest. “There are two of them and if you want to keep my brain oxygenated, focus on this one,” she tapped the right side of her chest. “And the obvious,” she lifted her arm, wiggling the artificial fingers. “I can maintain the mechanical parts of it, but I have check-ups every two months to make sure there’s no issues with the biological side of it.”

‘At least the records were correct about those parts.’ he mused, before Kaia continued once more.

“I have a very low body mass compared to most humanoid species, the conversion chart for most medications should be included in my file. I’d like to assume you’ve noticed it but you’re a very busy person so just in case I need emergency medical care, I’m pointing it out. There are also several medications that would be detrimental to my health despite working great on most humanoids, those are also listed in a table at some point in the file.” She paused from what seemed like a memorized list of things to mention and waited for the Doctor to respond.

Ben paused for a moment. “Well, you’ll be pleased to know that your file, aside from your species, is correct. But hey, what’s in a name?” he said, sarcastically. He would log a correction to be forwarded on to Starfleet after the appointment.

“Was there anything in particular you had a concern about?” he asked, running a tricorder over her.

The tricorder showed that Kaia was a healthy individual, although it did take a moment to recalibrate! “I’m far less prone to common viral-borne diseases, because, well, my cells literally can’t follow the same directions due to my whole… not DNA thing. I think that’s mentioned in my files, my species, as well as the others on Galdor, have a genetic code based in a different molecule. So genetic therapy for radiation exposure does have to be adjusted (also explained in my file). Uh… I’m more prone to bone breakage cause of the thin bones.” She shrugged. “I think that’s everything relevant to my medical care.”

Ben nodded. “Yes, I saw those comments in your file, however sometimes medical files can take a while to get to the exact point, so I appreciate you point out the key bits.” He said with a smile. “There is nothing of concern in your scans, so unless you have anything else you wanted to talk through or me to look at, you’re free to go.”

“I don’t think there’s anything else I need to bring up…” Kaia thought for a moment, then jolted as she did remember something, she looked a little embarrassed as she explained. “I have uh… I have a prescription from my therapist/doctor on my homeworld, for a, erm, psychological issue. It’s nothing you need to be concerned with, it’s more of a Counselor discussion thing. But I do need to come to Sickbay to refill it quarterly. That’s all.”

Kaia hopped off the biobed.

“Well, I trust the Counsellor to manage that prescription, but you must let us know if you’re having any adverse effects.” Ben said, not wanting to pry any further, but keen to ensure that Kaia correctly managed any issues.

“Thank you, Doctor,” Kaia replied with a small smile. “I think that’s really everything now.”
