The tables in the lounge had been rearranged, leaving some around the perimeter, but the rest were replaced by curved rows of chairs facing the small stage to corm half circles. On the stage were two chairs sat facing the audience at a ninety degree angle to each other. A rectangular case sat on the stage in front of one of the chairs, it’s glossy black material inlaid with delicate geometric half circle pieces of stone in two tones that were arranged to form interlocking circles around the edge of the lid.

The half-powered lights melded with the little lanterns on each table that cast a soft light and more of the same interlocking circle patterns on to the table tops and walls. Out the windows, the stars streaked by as the Manhattan moved at warp.

Earlier that week, an invitation had gone out to the general crew board:

You are invited to a special performance by one of Kobliad’s most renowned prizar musicians, Sal Songz.
Join us for a mixture of traditional pieces and the unique compositions that Sal is most known for.
Saturday, 1900 hours, Deck 8 Lounge

In the front row, three seats had been reserved for Sair, her mother and Koro, but everything else was fair game. Sair was busy moving the last of the chairs into place with some help and making sure everything was perfect. She was both excited and nervous. No one on this ship, except for Alex, had heard the prizar being played, so that was special, but it was also an important opportunity for her people as a whole to share some of the culture they’d been fighting a losing battle to preserve. Now that they had hope again, it felt so important to to share this with others. That she adored her father and hearing him play was an exquisite experience- one she wanted her shipmates to have.

She moved about dressed in a slightly more casual form of traditional dress that she and her mother had worn to that dinner with the captain: midnight blue wide legged pants, a semi-sheer white tunic and a midnight blue coloured wrap that was wrapped over one shoulder and around her body. Her pale pink hair held small crystal flowers that were twisted into her fine locks.

At the bar, they were ready with whatever attendees might want to drink, but she herself had made a batch of ekal- the milky drink made from ground subra nuts that was sieved through water and spiced with a ground up hot seed called ‘ekalonlenum.

With twenty minutes before things would start, Sair tried to see if anything was amiss, noting that people had started to arrive. “Please, help yourselves to food and drink. The kitchen is making appetizers if you’re hungry and there’s a spicy Kobliad drink called ekal that is non-alcoholic if you’re interesting in trying something new,” she said with a beaming smile. Her smile was so rare these days that it would not be unexpected for people to wonder what the change was in the oft-serious counsellor.

Eilah entered the lounge with a small smile. Those here seemed interested, curious, happy there was an event for the crew. He returned Sair’s smile when he saw her, feeling her excitement. “I would love to try ekal,” he said, looking at what food was ready out.

Sair beamed. “It’s freshly made, though I should warn you that it has a bit of a kick, but it’s not overly spicy.”

Fayth smiled. “Then I should enjoy it greatly,” he said.

It was a musical event and Shedda fully expected that Alex would attend. Food was being prepared and she wondered if Harv was busy in the kitchen, or if she would have to deal with the surely man having a tantrum the next day because he hadn’t been asked.

Shedda was rarely seen out of uniform and today was one of those rare exceptions. She was wearing dark brushed grey dress slacks with a long sleeved, madarian collar in dark purple with a paisley design. Her dark hair was pinned up, as always, in a very proper bun. She saw Sair and walked over. “Good evening, Sair. You look excited.”

Sair turned and smiled warmly at Shedda. “I very much am. Tonight is very special.” She wasn’t even sure how well should convey to the crew how unique an opportunity this was for them, even though her father was about the most humble person she knew.

“Hello Cmdr.,” she greeted Fayth. “I recommend the ekal. It is very good.”

“Listen to her,” Songz said with a grin, pointing at Shedda. “But I will be right back. I just need to check on one thing before my parents arrive.” Sair stepped backwards for a moment, before turning and a flourish, the loose ends of her pinned sash swirling with her.

Eilah smiled at Shedda and Sair. “I can’t wait. If you’re excited, so am I.” He said politely.
