Cochrane smiled and said “We are, indeed. And I look forward to it.” He turned and began walking, leading her along the path and towards the waterfall. As they got closer, the sound of the waterfall was loud enough that he resorted to hand gestures to show her where to be careful when she stepped. The path worked its way behind the falling water and back into a small cave-like area, but not before the mist and cascade had dampened them. Here the sound was muffled slightly. Cochrane shook his head to get the water off of it and he looked at her and smiled. “I used to come here as a kid a lot. It was one of the few places i could get away form the drama of my family life.” and he chuckled.

Sair had followed him diligently, mindful of her steps. Mist clung to her face and her brown eyes were alit as she took in the surrounding sounds. Finally, she turned to face him. “I can see why. It’s a special place. Like a cocoon.”

She closed her eyes, soaking in the sound, and found herself humming for a moment. She was matching the pitch to the frequency of the water and correspondingly to her prizar. She could already imagine the lilting high notes to replicate the feeling of the mist falling on her face. She smiled and opened her eyes. “Thank you for sharing this place with me. I suspect it’s not something you do often.”

Cochrane shook his head. “The only people who know about the real cave are my sisters and my mother and father. My actual mother… not my biological one.” He sat down on a large, round stone and stretched his legs out. “This program I have shared with a few close friends… or, at least, those who became close. I am a firm believer that everyone needs a sanctuary of therer own design or choice. It helps refocus one’s mind.”

Sair sat carefully on a rock next to him, gazing at the back of the waterfall with wonder. “You speak a truth, and I have advocated something similar to people over the years in one capacity or another. But when I was the Outpost during my first stint in the program, I had a fellow doctor tell me about an expression Terrans have about doctors making terrible patients. I think it is quite possibly a universal sentiment,” she said with a rare (these days) grin. “I guess I didn’t know I needed something like this till you showed me just now.”

Cochrane laughed and said “Doctors do make terrible patients. I’ve seen it first-hand.” H stared at the water for a moment and then said “Well… you are welcome to this program. But maybe designing something of your own would do you more good. I created this because this place is special to me. Maybe you have a place like that of your own.”

“You know, it was suggested to me at one point that I could make a program of places on Kobliad so that people here and elsewhere could some of what makes our world special. There are Kobliads in the Federation, but it’s exceptionally rare and before it was usually under less than ideal circumstances. That and sometimes it’s hard to feel deep fondness for our world, even when we’re fighting so hard for it.”

Sair inhaled deeply and blew it out before looking at Alex. “I’ll think about it, but for now thank you for letting me use this program.” That he let her in to this place and into this piece of her life was not lost on her. What she knew so far of Alexander Cochrane was that he didn’t something like this on a whim, so she was humbled and honoured.
