Sair drew in a deep breath. “He’s not napping anymore, but I try to get him to have a bit of quiet time mid-afternoon, otherwise he’s either too tired for food or still running about wanting to do this and that he doesn’t want to sit long enough to eat. Either way, you end up with a hungry and cranky child on your hands.”
Shedda nodded, “I’ll make sure he gets it. If you need the extra time, I’ll make sure he eats.” Shedda put a hand in her arm. “I know this is a very private and personal thing, but you aren’t alone. You just have to tell us what you need, alright?”
Sair almost waved her off, but instead she just inhaled and nodded. “Thank you. Right now, just knowing that Koro is in good hands helps immensely.”
Having conferred with Shedda, Sair moved over to where Koro and Harv was working. “Koro, Love. Would it be okay if you stayed with Shedda longer and then I come get you before dinner?”
He nodded his little head. “Are you working?”
Sair crouched down. “Something like that. I just need to be somewhere for awhile.”
“I have the shal… no, shawl for Mirane. Can I give it to her?” Koro said.
She nodded, doing her best to hold back her emotions and stuff it behind the mask she had worn as a physician and therapist for so many years. “You now what? I think she’d really like it if we took it to her after dinner.”
“Maybe we can use the magic to make something for her?” Koro said, looking up at Harv.
It was so heartbreakingly sweet and Sair wanted nothing more than to scoop her son up and spend this time with him, but someone else needed her right now. She felt torn a lot lately, her attention split. So far, Koro didn’t seem upset by her diverted focus, but was it only time? “If she’s up for eating it, sure. But just know that she might not be.”~Sair & Koro
Harv looked at the Counselor and said “I have just the thing. I’d be happy to teach the boy how to make it.” He looked down at Koro and his face was weighted with seriousness. “It sounds like your mee-maw isn’t feeling too good. So… think you can help me make some serious kitchen magic? It will be hard work, but I promise it will help her feel better.”
Chef Harv
Shedda stood out of the way while Sair spoke with Koro. He was such a sweet and sensitive little boy. She smiled slightly seeing Harv had a similar idea with the food that she’d had with having Koro choose a blanket. It provided Koro a way to help when he knew something was wrong.
Shedda
Sair wasn’t sure what Harv did or did not know. She suspected that somehow he knew more than he would let on. Did that bother he? It was as Shedda said, personal and private. But on a ship like this, things rarely stayed a secret and it wasn’t that they were actually trying to do so. It was just… hard. She nodded a little to Harv with gratitude.
Koro studied Harv and nodded. “I can work hard, but you might have to help me with some things.”
“I’m sure he and Shedda will help with whatever you ask for,” Sair said with a warm smile, running a hand over his head. “I’ll see you a little later my sweet.” She leaned in and kissed his cheek and stood up. “Have fun,” she told the trio and stepped out of the kitchen and the Officer’s Mess that still made her feel uncomfortable.
~Sair & Koro
Shedda watched Sair leave for a brief moment, keeping her worry off her face. She would check on Sair later. Who counseled the counselor? It seemed that Sair needed it. Shedda turned to look at Koro with a bright smile. “Well if this is some serious magic have you done all the preparation Harv said you needed?”
Shedda
Harv kept his eye on Koro and said “Soon enough. First: we wash.” He went to a metal table and picked up two large pots and a smaller one as well. “Ok, Mater Koro…” and he handed the small pot to him. “Wash that over here.” He led the boy to the deep sink and pulled over a small metal crate. “Stand on that. Now we need hot water and soap. Normally we could just replicate a new pot, but these are special. These are the ones we do out magic in. Okay?” and he began to show the boy how to scrub and clean.
Chef Harv
Koro took his scrubbing rather seriously, scrunching his face up as he vanquished the unseen dirt that might be on the pot. He lifted up on his tiptoes a couple of times and then broke out into a giggle as a bubble from the soap foamed up. Then his brown eyes went wide and he looked first at Harv and then at Shedda. “After we do the food magic can we make bubbles I can take back to our quarters? They would make mama smile. Please Shedda, can we?”
~Koro
It was hard to say no to Koro. He was so genuinely sincere and earnest. However, Shedda didn’t want to go against any rules that Sair had. “Hmmm. Does mira have any rules about bubbles?” They could be very messy and the solution could be hard to clean up.
Shedda
Koro scrunched up his face. “I don’t think so. Mira says mess is fine but we have to clean it up.” And generally that seemed to be true. “Mirane would love it too and tells Mira that she should have more fun. She’s too seee…” He searched his brain for the right word in Standard. “Serwious?”
~Koro
Shedda grinned. “Yes, serious.” She emphasized the r slightly while confirming he had remembered the eight word. “All adults can be like that sometimes. “Well we have quite the list of things to do after. Let’s focus on the kitchen magic and then we can see how much time we have, okay?”
