Eilah hadn’t expected the transfer away from the Starbase, but it was far from unwelcome. The Starbase was peaceful and calm, nestled along the old Romulan neutral zone, but with a lot of traffic as people came and went from the Starbase. This ship was way out there, which… He wouldn’t say worried him, but he did think about. The journey to get here had been long. After three years planet side, the motion of a ship would take some getting used to again, he decided shortly after boarding via teleporter. He’d gone to check out his new quarters first. Roomy. He liked it. Now he headed up to meet the Captain.
Using a PaDD with a map of the ship, he quickly found his way to the Captain’s ready room and rang the chime.

“Come in.” a voice said from inside. The door silently slid open to reveal the office beyond. The office was organized, but had the feel of both authority… and peace. Two bookcases on one wall stood with shelves lined with actual books behind their glass doors. Pictures had been mounted around the room showing both places and people, many of them featuring the same person. Various odds and ends graced places here and there.
Displayed prominently, however, alone on a shelf high up on the wall directly behind the desk that sat opposite the door, was the lone figure of a gold Ox. Lighting had been directed so that it drew the eye of anyone who came through the door almost immediately. Below that hung a… ‘coat’, for lack of a better word… that seemed to originate from a vid from Earth circa the mid twentieth century. Specifically those years many referred to as ‘the 70’s’. Bright red, lined in fur, it looked like it would belong to someone named ‘Pookie’ or perhaps ‘Moe Bootie’.
His gaze was immediately drawn to the ornament displayed on a shelf on the opposite side of the room. That was less interesting though than the
hideousno, did he think that? Lovely. It was a great coat. Who would wear that?!Okay, Eilah. Focus. He brought his attention to the ship’s commanding officer, the Fleet Captain.
Seated behind the desk was the Commanding Officer, Fleet Captain Alexander Cochrane. He looked up as the doors opened. His hair was black, making the ice-blue eyes beneath the well-groomed hair even more intense. He had a youthful appearance, somewhat more so than the Fleet Captain’s pips at his collar would seem to indicate. He smiled and stood up and, holding out his hand, he said with a slight British accent “Lieutenant Commander. As I don’t immediately recognize you, I will hazard a guess and say you are our new Security Chief?”

Eilah stepped into the office with confidence, standing tall… Well, as tall as he could, at five foot five. He shook the offered hand with a firm grasp. “Fleet Captain. That guess would be correct.” He offered a smile as he stood in front of the desk and introduced himself. “Lieutenant Commander Fayth.”

A small flicker of recognition sparked in Cochrane’s ice-blue eyes at the name, but he said “Welcome aboard. Please, be seated. And then tell me about yourself and how you managed to wind up on the Manhattan. But first… something to drink?” Cochrane moved to the replicator and ordered a black currant and lemon tea for himself.
Cochrane, CO
“Coffee, please,” Eilah replied, and then chuckled. “I became addicted to the stuff in Academy. I’ve been meaning to quit for years.” He took a seat and made himself comfortable. “Well, I was offered a transfer, accepted it, and then was sent here.” Eilah said, and then smiled and shook his head, “Sorry, Captain.” He cleared his throat. “What would you like to know?”

Cochrane chuckled and ordered the drink, bringing both back to the desk and setting them down. Taking a seat, he said “Why Security? Why Star Fleet? And what would make you want to come so very far away from home?”
Cochrane, CO
“Well, my little sister happens to be the chief medical officer over the largest Starfleet medical colonial facility, as a Lieutenant Commander. It was time to up my game.” That was another joke. Well, mostly. Eilah smiled. “In all seriousness, I traveled a lot as a kid. I was always really excited to meet new people and see different places. There is a whole lot of that out here, and I want to see them and meet those people.” He considered for a moment, and then went on, “I joined Starfleet to make a difference and to see new places and people. The Delta quadrant is the perfect place for that, though I had my reservations. And I was ready to get off a planet side assignment and back to what I joined for. Exploring space.”
“Why Security? Well…” Eilah looked down and then met the Captain’s gaze once again. “I was a young child when Betazed was occupied during the war. We were pitifully unprepared. Many of my childhood friends died. My mother fell ill, and we were all in danger and there was absolutely nothing I could do, save for sneak into the town and steal food and medicine. I was five years old. Starfleet has the best training available, and they help people who are unable to help themselves.”

“Five?” Cochrane said with raised eyebrows. “That’s a lot for a child to take on. And even more so that you were successful. I am impressed. How do you think that time during the occupation helped you get where you are? And let’s flip that… how may it have hindered you in your career?”
Cochrane, CO
“It taught me a determination nothing else could have. A want to protect and help people. On the other hand, those same traits can make me stubborn, reckless even. Not that I’ve done anything that reckless in several years.” He had to smile a little. As a child, he’d managed to earn himself various injuries and sprains with his antics. “To take it further, I like to take the safe route. As you well know, that strategy isn’t always the best one in Starfleet.”

Cochrane listened intently. He was silent a moment after Fayth finished and then he said “Would you say you are risk-averse? Or that you avoid conflict?”
Cochrane, CO
“I wouldn’t say I avoid it. Just don’t go looking for it.” Eilah replied, after a bit of consideration. “I’m a chief of Security. Conflict is a part of the job. But the less, the better.”
