Before he’d arrived on the Manhattan, when Eilah was aboard a ship to be transported to his new post, he spent some of his time in what he considered to be a very wise way: writing his little sister. Working from a PaDD, he considered for a while what to include in the letter.Sharah,
I hope you’re doing well. It’s been a little while since we’ve written to each other. I hope to hear from you more often.
I’m writing to let you know I’m no longer on SB 52. I’m being transferred to the USS Manhattan in the Delta quadrant. It’s pretty far out there, so I hope we can still keep in contact. I’m pretty sure we can. I wanted to get back to exploring space. It is why I joined up, after all.
How are things going on Oed? Meet anyone new and interesting? Any career related updates for me?

When he finished the letter, he had it sent off.

Sharah was always excited to get a letter from Eilah. His request to write more often made her feel guilty. After the protests she had avoided writing to him more than a few words. Claiming she was busy but thinking of him. She had completely refused to send a recorded message because he always knew, even over light years, when something was wrong. It took her some time to figure out how to say what needed to be said.

I am well now. Yes I did say now. The adjustment to Oed has been rough and incredibly overwhelming. I like it here though. I like my work. I feel like I’m actually doing something. I like being a department head. I don’t mind all the paperwork. It’s kind of meditative. Even the work is overwhelming though. We work out of the local hospital, Sacred Heart, and they were without a Chief of Staff. They asked me to fill in. It’s so much, but it feels good to have direction. And … well … something happened. With my telepathy. I don’t really know how to explain it just yet. But I am talking to my counselor and we’re working through it. I wish you were here, it would be so much easier to share with you.
You’ll be proud of me. I did something I never ever thought I would do. The head nurse hosts a fundraiser every year for the hospital. She had a bachelorette auction and I participated. I KNOW! Me!
I have met all kinds of interesting people. There was an attack on a local business man and the head of the colonial defense force. I met his second in command. He’s annoyingly likable. Reminds me of you. (Love you Eilah!). One of the nurses is Deltan. Her name is Yavia. She’s pretty amazing. Oh and our head PT is a Klingon who just got married to the head of House Duroc. He’s interesting. Makes me nervous but not scared. I’ve met the Governor and the Lt Governor.
OH! I got promoted to Lt Cmdr. Which means I have to teach. I can’t teach! Save me, Eilah. I’m living off on my own in a house, not in the barracks. Hope is thriving. She likes having real sunlight.

He read her response as soon as he received it. He worried about her… especially after reading something happened with her telepathy. But she seemed to be doing okay and he was left wondering if maybe he worried a little too much?
Nah. That’s what big brothers are for. By the time he got the chance to reply though, it was the night of his first day aboard the Manhattan.

Lieutenant Commander AND chief of staff! You’re climbing quick! Teaching isn’t that hard. Rely on your experience! And use examples.
I’m glad you’re talking with your counselor but I worry, Sharah. What happened? Were you okay? Maybe we can organise a video call. I don’t know when I’ll be able to make it out to visit. It sounds like we go out pretty far out here. If we do anything really cool though, I’ll be sure to tell you.
You! In a bachelorette auction! Sharah, you brave girl! I bet you were beautiful, too. Who bet on you? Someone good, I hope? Sounds like you’re making all kinds of friends. At this rate you won’t need me, anymore. I’m glad Hope is well.

He considered what he’d written. At this rate, you won’t need me anymore. She sort of already didn’t. And he was truly proud of her for it. But that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to tease her a little. He sent the letter.

His letter made her sad and laugh all at the same time.
Eilah! Don’t say that. I will always need my big brother. I will always need you. I can’t do this without you.
I told you that the head of the colonial defense was attacked along with a prominent businessman. There was a protest over it. Outside the hospital. It was so terrifying and overwhelming Eilah. They were upset and scared, and then suddenly the whole mood of the crowd changed to hatred and violence. I was swept away with it, drowning in it. I just remember wishing they would calm down that it would stop. Then… it did. Then I passed out. They kept me for observation. My psilosynine levels had dropped to almost zero. They have of course returned to my normal. I don’t know how I did it. The not knowing how I did it frightens me more than anything. How can I stop from doing it again if I don’t know what I did? I feel so lost and out of control Ei. I’d really like a live call with you.
The Delta quadrant is so far away. I’m not surprised you went though. You’ve always loved traveling and seeing new places. Knowing how much you loved it was the only thing that made all those trips bearable. I wish you could come visit. I want you to meet someone. Mom and Dad said they would come, I wanted to ask you too, but with a new post I know it will be awhile. Maybe I can come see you? There’s a station out there isn’t there? I don’t know much about it. What’s the ship like? Do you like it so far?
The auction was nerve wracking, but we raised a lot for the refugees coming into Oed. Oh my gosh Ei! The Governor of Oed bid on me and won! I was so surprised. There is more to tell, but they just called me for a consultation. Write again soon.
