It was quiet through the lab, as a certain Vulcan decided to work through the night. He found himself unable to sleep, and meditation was just not doing the job tonight. He had much on his mind and he just couldnt quiet it down tonight so he did what he did best. If someone were to ask about the time, it would have been around 2 in the morning ship time. Sovrk found himself coning to this general puropse lab alot to carry out some analasys of materials he had wanted to check himself. He trusted his crew, but sometimes he went back over things to test things for himself. It was one of those things that helped him think easier, as well as it got him away from the administrative tasks he had to do. Not that he minded them, but sometimes he just wanted to be in a lab working away. He had almost made the lab his own, though when it came time for the workday to get started he would give it all up. Only to repeat on another long sleepless night. The Vulcan stood intron of a microscope carefully adjusting the focus to bring what ever he had on a slide underneath it to focus through the lenses. As he worked he seemed to dictate his notes. “Slide one came from a uninhabited planet that is currently unnamed. The sample came from a mineral depots found in a cave that descended a few kilometers below the planet surface. Initial analysis shows…” He pauses as he looks through the microscope. “This is strange… the rock like substance appears to be organic when observed under a microscope. I will have to send it to one of the labs for biology and see what their results were.”
Lt.J.G Sovrk,CSOSovrk carefully catalogued his base findings as he worked on the first micro organism, that had the structure of a mineral, however scans gave the looks of an organic micro organism. He then prepared a small containment unit. He transferred the organism to the containment unit then set it aside, he marked it as something that would require analysis by the bio lab. He then prepared another slide carefuly the Vulcan male continued to work, he examined specimens after specimen.
Lt. J.G. Sovrk, CSOThere was a strange noise coming from the wall. The sound of metal hitting metal, then a pained squeak.
-???Sovrk looked up and then to the wall. He tilted his head slightly as he looked for a pannel on the wall to get inside. “Is someone there?”
Lt.J.G. Sovrk, CSOThere was further scrambling, then another sound of metal against metal. A muffled voice said something but it was incomprehensible through the insulated wall. The scrabbling noise traveled to a particular panel in the wall, then after a few more sounds, said panel fell off the wall and out emerged Kaia. Her uniform shirt was tied around her waist, but it was clearly engineering yellow. The small alien officer had several tool-belts dragging after her, which fell onto the floor in a racket as she raised a hand and smiled sheepishly. “Hi! Sorry, was chasing after a repair drone that decided to stop working in an inaccessible area.”
Kaia, Eng
Sovrk looked taken aback for the briefest of moments. The Vulcan male was indeed surprised. “I see…” He said as looked to her. “I thought I was going to have to get security here.” He said before shrugging, now completely unfazed. “It seems that is what they meant when I heard tale of the ghost of the ship scuttering through the halls… it’s preposterous but I suppose everyone must have tales of the unexplained to help them cope with things they do not understand.” He said then gave her a second up and down this time noting more details about her appearance. “I do not believe I have ever met anyone of your species.”
Lt. J.G. Sovrk, CSO“Ah, sorry about that. I tend to get sent through some of the more…” she glanced back at the little crawl-space, “inaccessible areas of the ship. Due to my small size. Not every ship has someone who can get in those places. They’re a little dustier than they were a few years ago,” she rambled for a moment, then remembered she was in a conversation. Kaia looked way up to meet the eyes of the Vulcan, then let out a small huff and stepped over to a lab stool and climbed up it as easily as a lemur climbing a tree. She still wasn’t on eye-level, but at least she was a little closer to it Not craning her neck to look at the Vulcan anymore, at least. “I’m a Raka. From Galdor in the way all humans are from Earth even if they weren’t born there. I was born on Oba. It’s a moon of a Gas Giant we call Tipo. Nice enough place, lots of trees. You’re a Vulcan, right?”
Kaia, Engineer
Sovrk watched as Kaia moved around. He found another stool and sat. “I see, yes I am a Vulcan. Born and of the planet Vulcan.” He said as monotonous as ever. He pulled up a PADD and queried the race out of his own curiosity. His expression soured just for a moment. “It seems that not much is known about them… or at least my query doesn’t provide much results.” He said before he put the PADD down. “That is fine however. I suppose I can catalogue anything that I find out during our time on this ship together.” He said somewhat thoughtfully.
Lt. J.G. Sovrk, CSO“We’re not the most common people in the Galaxy. I’m happy to answer any questions,” Kaia said with a small smile, idly tapping her wrist. “It might help to search the Galdor-Kalari-Okinos Alliance. I think most of the information regarding my people is there.”
Kaia, Engineer
Sovrk nodded and queried up just that. He looked thoughtful as he read. “Interesting.” He said as he scrolled through the information. “That is intriguing.” He said softly to himself as he read, after a few minutes he put down the PADD. “There are a multitude of sentient species within this Galdor-Kalari-Okinos Alliance that I have never heard of. The physiology seems interesting. The difference between almost remind me a little of the Xindi… though it seems there were more peaceful beginnings of contact.”
Lt. J.G. Sovrk, CSO“I’ve read some things about the Xindi. It’s similar in that there were many species developing on one planet, yeah. But we had the Lords of Kobol to guide us to a peaceful way of living - and a peaceful encounter with and joining to the Federation,” Kaia replied with a small smile. “Oba is mostly inhabited by Raka and Pipini, but I’ve interacted with the other races relatively frequently. There was a bit of a group at the Academy,” she shrugged. “Internally, we call it the Interstellar Alliance. That’s what it was before my people met yours. The Federation came up with the hyphenated mess.”
Kaia, Engineer
Sorvk nodded. “The Federation likes to be and has a necessity to be precise. I dont doubt that there are many Interstellar Alliances. I agree they could have come up with something better mostly likely, however it is precise to a point where it should offer no confusion about who is being discussed whenever it may come up. With records the preciseness helps with easy identification and recollection.” He said thoughtfully. “I wonder though… it seems your species and others that are of similar ilks resemble closely some lifeforms that is on the Planet Earth. I wonder… how close is the DNA sequencing…” He muttered off to himself prattling about some biological jargon that he may have understood it also may have sounded like utter nonsense.
Lt.J.G. Sovrk, CSO“I’ve looked it up,” Kaia spoke, “Apparently we don’t code information the same way as most humanoid species. Basically, I don’t have DNA, or RNA, it’s a different molecule. We can eat the same food, mostly, but I have to get some specialized diet replicated or shipped over cause my proteins are weird. As for the reference to some lifeforms on Earth, I’m aware I look like a domestic cat,” she seemed to find the idea amusing, even chuckling slightly as she leaned back on her seat. “They’ve tried to make connections. Learned about it in the Galdori Support group at the Academy. Even if our genetics wasn’t coding differently, I have as much in common with an Earth Cat as you do, internally. It’s all mixed up different.”
Kaia, Engineer
Sovrk nodded. “That makes sense, your physiology may be something akin however your biology is much different. That is not too surprising. But it is interesting and a testament to how species evolve. As well as the adaptations that one develops due to environment.” He looked thoughtful. “That makes me wonder.... with the differences in how your species is genetically coded… how adaptable it is to mutation or outside influence…” He looked thoughtful for a moment then waved his hand. “Stray thought. It makes no difference, research like that has long since been outlawed. Or similar research topics anyway. This has been an interesting night.” He mused, there were slight sounds of joy in his words, though they were quickly squashed. “Either way it’s not every day someone meets a ship-urban legend. So other than crawling through the tiny sections not fit for habitation… and repair drones breaking… what else do you get up.. or in to?”
Lt. J.G. Sorvk, CSOKaia chuckled. “Would you believe me if I said my ancient ancestors more closely resembled lemurs than cats? At least that’s what the paleontologists teach us,” she explained, then shrugged. “I spend a lot of time in the Holodeck, when I get a chance. Jogging around the ship is fine but I prefer the opportunity to stretch my arm and tail on a good tree. Also, softer footing in a simulation of a forest path. Other than that, a lot of time in my room, tinkering on this project or that. I try to get out and attend social functions if they happen, but I’m not so good at that.”
Kaia, Eng
Sorvk nodded “Anything is possible. Evolution introduces new features to a body that are necessary for survival… and will remove things as they are not needed anymore. It’s all about environmental stimuli.” He said before looking thoughtful. “I see. I have never really felt grass for myself. As for social functions yes that I understand.” He nodded. “I find myself working on something or another. Like now its very late and I was cataloging some samples we took from a seemingly uninhabited planet we recently visited.”
Lt. Sovrk, CSO“We got these cat-like features because my evolutionary ancestors started hunting prey instead of settling for fruits and leaves. We still maintained our lemur-like tree-top lifestyle, it was necessary because of the Big Killers on the jungle floor. But we got these great retractable claws, whiskers for keeping balance, great scent glands, and feline pupils while keeping our prehensile tails, impeccable sense of balance, and the ability to use all four of our limbs to grab branches,” Kaia remembered from biology class. “We’re going to have to fix that. Get you to touch grass. Did you not go to the Academy in San Francisco? Or been to a planet other than Vulcan?”
Kaia, Eng
Sorvk nodded. “That makes sense. The genome evolved for hunting. I did go to the academy in San Francisco. However I didn’t pay much attention to the foliage at the time even if it was particularly foreign. I mean I knew about it but was never all that curious about grass itself. Many other mysteries of science that I was thinking of. I have had lofty goals for my time in Starfleet.”
Lt.J.G. Sovrk, CSO“You never like… walked across a lawn on campus?” Kaia laughed and shook her head slightly. “Honestly every moment I could, I was spending outside on the grass and among the trees on campus. I even did some exploring during my holidays. I saw the Sequoias of the western coast. They aren’t as impressive as the trees back home, but they’re quite impressive for Earth trees.
Kaia, Engineer
Sorvk shook his head. “No not really. I was always off to study one thing or another occupying my time with research or whatever academia filled my curiosity. The why things were the way the were was a huge drive in that. The trees on Earth use to have medium lifespans that were offten cut down prematurely. It isn’t a supprise that there would not be as big as whay you were likely accustomed to. Though I believe they are accounted to be the largest trees on Earth. Next time we come across a densly forested planet I may have to have you on the survey team with us.” He said seriously.
