“Sounds good, Chef,” Faye said moving over to a far table where she had a good view of the entire mess hall. “How’s his cooking?” she asked quietly, with curiosity.

Hammor shook his head a made face that spoke volumes. “Amazing. I can’t remember having better. He used to be Head Chef at on of the resorts on Rigel. Got in a bind with someone, and now he’s here. Don’t know the particulars, but i do know he keeps a low-profile. He said he only likes me ‘cause I’m Orion, and he may need a big muscular guy sometime.” and he laughed.

Little tiny alarms sounded in Faye’s head though she was good at not letting it show on her face. Instead, she just tucked that bit of information away for later when she’d need to review it carefully.

Faye managed to give him a little smirk. “Well, we’ll see. For me, nothing beats home cooking with fresh ingredients right from the ground you grew them from. Sure, replicators can synthesize ripeness, but nothing tastes better than something you grew yourself.”

Hammor grinned. “You do know I handle all cargo and supplies, right? You think I’d let a chef with his pedigree use replicated food? No. Way. Fresh ingredients brought on at every stop, and I have a deal worked out with a few of the botanists in the lab for fresh veggies. May not be exactly ‘grown yourself’, but it technically is home grown.” and he laughed a bit.

Faye shrugged slightly. “Close enough, sure. All I was saying is that there is a great deal of satisfaction that comes with growing things yourself and then making food with it.” She looked off to the side a bit. “It’s like for a little while you’re working with something, rather than it being a big fight. Even when it’s hard work and you are frustrated, the only way it works is if you stop fighting it so much.” She frowned. “Sorry, that sounded rather sentimental.” Which she rarely was. It was definitely not something someone could accuse her of ever.

Hammor smiled and said “Lessons that could be applied to a great number of things, I think. Although I have never been really good and just sitting back and letting things go. Maybe I should try gardening, though. I already have the green thumbs.” The last bit was said with a laugh, as he knew the pun was terrible but too hard to resist.

She couldn’t help by snort with amusement and then shook her head. “I’m not a botanist at all, but I remember lots from growing up on Tracken. We had little in the way of extra resources and replicators were rarely used for food, so we grew, gathered and hunted what we ate.” Faye couldn’t help but be nostalgic for that time in her life. After all, it was before everything had turned upside and become a nightmare.
