The idea had spawned as a passing thought while sharing dinner with Sair. Now it had blossomed into a full blown plan. Shedda stood in the middle of the holodeck scene. A soft grassy lawn, dotted with various different chairs, blankets, floor pillows, even a couple of hammock chairs suspended from trees. A large white screen was stretched across a frame waiting for light and motion to be projected along with various speakers scattered around. There was a small counter with heating elements and several Manhattan imprinted insulated cups for the crew to prepare and partake of the various hot beverages that would be on offer. Sair and Shedda had asked the crew to bring with them or to prepare on the holodeck a favorite hot beverage of their choice to share with everyone else.

They had decided to show a movie and had asked the crew to vote on a few choices. They would be offering a more family friendly film first, for those with young children, and then something for the older teenagers and adults after. Shedda looked around. “What do you think Sair? Should we put a few activities off to the side for the kids, incase they get bored? That way no one has to leave if the children get restless?”

Shedda

(snip)

Sair nodded, the amusement from a moment before evaporating. She wanted to just be able to put a brave face on, but it was too hard right now. “It was unfortunately necessary. I wouldn’t have been able to up and leave here, or rather she didn’t want me to since this is where I really wanted to be ad being back home is too hard,” she said, stirring the pot. When she lifted her gaze to Shedda there was sadness, yes, but also resignation. “She’s only got a few more months left, maybe less. She didn’t tell me before I left so it wouldn’t influence my decision making. My father is on his way to join us. The captain has arranged for them to have diplomatic status so they can remain as they wish without any issues.” After all, they were civilians not assigned to a position and their governments were allied but Kobliad was not a member of the Federation.

Shedda nodded, “I saw. His name came through with the updated manifest and they have both been listed as Diplomatic representatives. I am very glad they he is able to come and join you all. That you will be together.” Shedda prepared another cup of tea and then handed it to Sair. It had an easy raspberry flavor with a hint if vanilla. “Is there anything you want or need for the four of you, to make this more comfortable. I am in charge of ship’s resources after all and what we don’t have I can get.”

Shedda

Sair nodded and accepted the cup from Shedda with a bow of her head in thanks. “We will. I think we’re just wrapping our minds everything and waiting for my father to get here. My mother’s guest quarters is more than big enough for the two of them.” She cast her gaze out over the setting, to her mother snuggled under a blanket in a chair and Koro curled up on her lap as she reclined. It made her feel many things at once, but mostly just gratitude for these small moments. They would need each and every one of them in the coming months. She sipped the lively drink and all but deflated in relaxation, something slipping away she didn’t even know she was holding.

The most suprising thing is likely that Sovrk showed up for the movie night. He brought with him a elegant looking tea pot that was larger than average. He had set it down amonst the other drinks, and left a holo note infront of it. The Hollonote read Vulcan Spiced tea, not for the inexperienced tea drinker. the Lt. himself stood somewhere off to the side.

He seemed to be there more to observe the goings on than to actually participate in the event. Though he had a tea cup in one hand that he ocasionally sipped from. As well as he had brought a special blend of tea from his home. He would watch each of the families for a few moments, and watched the kids be well kids. He seemed to be intrested in them a little. The life they lead was very different from the childhood he had, not that he was envious, he just was noting the differencees.

After a little while, before the movie started one little human boy, around 5 or 6 years old, ran up to Sovrk. He blinked at the child, not too sure of what to do before he knelt down to get closer. The young boy asked his question loudly “Hey mister… mister are you an elf?” The question caused Sovrk to blink and he shook his head before replying softly to the child. “No, I am not too sure what an elf is… but no. I am a Vulcan why would you think that?.” The boy blinked and said in a small voice “Oh.... okay…it’s because of your ears mister, their pointed.” and then ran off to rejoin his friends, his look rather disappointed.

Sovrk stood back up and brushed his knee off. His face was as passive as ever, but anyone who looked close there seemed to be a slight curious look in his eye. He didnt understand the boys question, and would have to go do research later. He mutter softly to himself l before going back to people watching.
Lt. J.G. Sorvk, CSO

OOC: I’m glad you bumpted it once more. This will be a fun little social experiment :P
D.Inman

OOC: Going to ret-con this slightly as Sal is now aboard so we’re just going to pretend this is after that. Her mother is in the thread already but I’ll have her father join shortly.
IC:
Sair smiled as she saw the new CSO had joined the gathering. “Sorvk,” she called out and gave a little wave.

“I saw you bring in the Vulcan spiced tea. What makes it spiced?” Songz asked curiously.

~Sair Songz, CNS

Sovrk broke his attention away from a group of kids who were playing. He walked over to Sair and gave the group a nod. “Evening.” He said and listened to her question, his expression had become one of slight bemusement. “How does anything become spiced Councilor?”

He paused for a moment before he continued. “We add a special blend of specially blended spices to the tea. It works much like someone adding mint or cinnamon to the tea. It leaves particles of the spice that defuse into the liquid and add to the flavor. If I had to compare it to a earth blend, it would be like a Chai tea with more cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, pepper, and cloves. The names of the actual spices are difficult for anyone that does not know how to fluently speak Vulcan. The replicators here can get fairly close. But as is anything it is not the same as a fresh pot with fresh ingredients.” He explained his expression smoothing out over the course of his explanation.

Sair shook her head. “I do not know what Chai is but it sounds not unlike the ekal I brought tonight. It is made from the milk of ground nuts but has a spicy seed pod that add a bit of heat.”

Shedda listened, her expression polite and interested, but she was quietly bemused at Sovrk’s explanation. She was sure many on board could pronounce them. As many had studied Vulcan. The Capt certainly could and they had some very talented linguists on board as well. She wouldn’t naysay him though. If he was anything but Vulcan she would say Sovrk was simply showing pride in his culture, and Shedda wouldn’t fault him for that.

She poured 2 cups of the spiced tea for herself and Sair and then a cup of ekal for Sovrk and handed them out.

Sovrk took the cup and looked at it. “Thank you.” He brought it up to his nose and took in the sent of the beverage. “Interesting.” He said softly.

He then looked between anyone present in the group. “How are you all?” He asked, it sounded strange, and foreign coming from his lips. He himself was not used to asking or to be asked, but he had tried to at the very least be polite.

She cast a glance behind her to where people were gathering for the movie and saw her son was still snuggling with his grandmother. When she looked back at Shedda and Sovrk, there was a bittersweet expression on her face. “Enjoying the moment,” Songz said softly.

~Sair Songz, CNS

Shedda nodded in understanding. “I am enjoying the more relaxed gathering. I don’t get to be off duty very often like this. And yourself?”

Mal’athar

Before taking a sip he nodded. “I understand Commander.” He took a sip of the ekal, then paused. He stood there for a moment in quiet contemplation. “It is different. Interesting. Not bad…” he said as if he couldnt settle on a proper adjective to describe it. He qould periodically sip on the drink. “I am well. I have been adjusting to my new duties. It was a little more than expected. But I will continue to do my best. It isn’t every day one gets to have his first department head on a vessel where his department is most of the mission, and being the biggest vessel of its class… or so the captain stated.” He paused a moment. “But work can wait. I will refrain, as it like you said Commander.. it isnt often you get to just relax.” He said softly his gaze following off to random families and their interactions. “I have heard of these ‘movies’ but I have never seen one myself.”
Lt.J.G Sovrk, CSO

Shedda grinned, “Oh it is. Manhattan is the first Manhattan class science vessel and the biggest science vessel in Star Fleet. I followed the design and development through the whole thing. It’s a scientist dream. If I do say so myself.” Shedda lifted the tea and tasted it. Not bad, not close to what she would usually choose for herself, but it was interesting. Quite complex. “I’ve never tasted anything like this, Lt. Thank you for bringing it.”

Sovrk nodded and sipped a bit more on the Ekal. “Yes, the facilities are indeed something that one would dream of. There are a few pieces that are even innovative to our means. You are welcome Commander.”

“Well, you’re not alone. It’s not a form of entertainment we have on Kobliad, either,” Sair said, just as a small child ran up to her and threw his arms about her legs. Sair had to hold the cup of spiced tea up and out so she didn’t spill the hot drink on herself or her son. “Careful, Koro. Mira has a hot drink.”

Sovrk blinks at the appearance of the child, the man had not expected the boy to fly out of seemingly nowhere. Though through his slightly startled look, he also had a bemused twinkle in his eye.

The Kobliad boy looked up and grinned sheepishly. “Sorry.”

Sovrk looked at the boy and nodded, he looked as if he was about to ask him a question when it was answered even before he could ask. His head turned back to Sair as she spoke.

“It’s okay,” Sair said, ruffling his dark hair and looking over at the the CSO. “Koro, this is Sovrk, our Chief Science Officer,” she said, saying the words carefully in Federation Standard.

“Chief Science Officer,” the boy said back, his face intensely focused on giving a correct pronunciation, which he did quite well.

“That’s right!” Sair said with a nod, giving Shedda a small grin. His speech was coming on leaps and bounds lately, which eased her mind a little. “Lieutenant Sovrk, this is my son, Koro.” The boy was perhaps about three or four years old and had the same Kobliad facial ridge that Sair had.

~Sair Songz, CNS

Sovrk nodded and knelt. He reguarded the boy with a curious look, it was clear he had not delt much with children of other species. He turned his attention back to the boy. “That’s very good. As your mother has said my name is Sovrk. It is a pleasure to meet you Koro. Now can you tell me how old are you?” His voice had a sudden gentleness when addressing Koro, whether it be a shock or not he knew not.

Shedda grinned back. Koro was such a bright and inquisitive kid.

Mal’athar, XO

Sorvk placed his hands on his knee, setting his cup in the grass beside his kneeling position.
