Harv nodded and said “She’s right. She just left out one important word. Magic makes impossible things happen. Here, watch this.” He reached over and picked up one of rhe white linen napkins and held it out to Koro. “Touch it. Feel it. Make sure you know it’s real.”

Shedda bowed her head just slightly. Yes that was an important distinction. She glanced at Koro to see if he was following. He was picking up Federation Standard quickly, but was still learning. However he was already reaching for the napkin, so Shedda didn’t interrupt.

Koro looked at him with some confusion, but he reached out and touched the napkin.

Harv took the napkin back and pushed back the sleeves on his coat slightly. He then made a slightly open fist and started stuffing the napkin in his hand. He poked it further and further into his fingers until it was all crammed inside. He looked at Koro and said “Now. Wave your hand over mine and say ‘GISHAK MITHRAKIS!’ as loud as you can.”

The words made no sense to him but Koro scrunched up his face as he held his hand over the man’s and shouted, “Gishak Mithrakis!” and waved his hand furiously, as if that might help whatever was supposed to happen. It was also notable that the boy repeated the words with the same intonation that Harv had used.

Shedda grinned at Koro’s enthusiasm, but didn’t laugh. Magic was serious business after all.

As Koro yelled the words, Harv threw his fist up in the air… and there was nothing. No napkin, no nothing. He looked at Koro and said “That is magic, little man.” And then he grinned. “Look in your right pocket.”

Mouth and eyes wide, Koro stared at Harv’s hand and then he looked up at Shedda. “Did you see it go somewhere, Shedda?!” he said, even as he went to check his pocket.

Shedda was more than prepared that the napkin would be gone, but she played along, just as shocked as Koro was. “No!” she exlaimed softly, eyes wide. “I only saw it go into his hand.” As the napkin appeared in the pocket, Shedda gasped, “How did it get there?”

Not only was the napkin in his pocket, but it was folded neatly in a square with the edges tucked in. “Open it up.” Harv said. When it was unfolded, a small gold earrings fell out. Harv looked at Shedda and said “Lose somethin’, Commander?” and he grinned and winked at Koro
