Shedda laughed, “You are tall. I bet you can see the whole ship from up there.” Shedda watched as several children raced across bridges and nets, and climbed up to the fort to swarm around the newest potential playmate.

Shedda

Koro retreated as the sudden wall of faces and noise became directed at him. He ducked against the pillar of the fort, trying to hide a little, though he was still visible.

Shedda walked over and showing off just a little to get the kids attention, she jumped slightly to grab a bar at the top of the fort and pulled herself up with just her arms. All the children knew her because she made it a point for everyone on the ship to know who she was. Especially the children. “Shedda!” and she was inundated with hugs and questions and stories about toys and friends and school. She sat crossed-legged on the platform and held a hand out to Koro to come join her and let him sit right next to her.

Koro crept out from his hideaway and knelt next to Shedda, all but huddling against her. He eyed the other children curiously, but seemed a little wary.

Shedda gave him a brief little hug, but tried not to crowd him. It was all new and scary and she wanted Koro to feel safe.

When the excitement died down she smiled, “I would like you all to meet my friend. This is Koro, and he’s new to the Manhattan. Koro this is Jynx, Caleb, Pl’kta, Byrle, and Imma.” They all waved at him, “Hi Koro.”

“I’m new too. I just came with my dad,” Byrle said, “My mom had to stay on our last ship. I really miss her.”

Shedda

For a moment Koro said nothing but then he looked up at Shedda and then the other children. “My grandmother took me here to be with my mother. She came here first. I missed her lots,” he said, testing his Federation Standard with the other children, which ostensibly was growing by leaps and bounds, not even just by the day, but by the hour.

All the children nodded in understanding. “I miss my grandma.” “I only met my grandma over the comms.” “I miss my sister, she left to go to school. She doesn’t call much anymore. My dad says it’s because she’s really busy.” “I always stay with my mom, but she says in six months my dad will be eligible to traverse here?”

Shedda smiled, “Transfer. That means he can move from the ship he is on to Manhattan.”

“Oh yeah, that transfer word.” “We used to be on a planet, I miss it. I don’t like being on a ship.” Jynx glanced at Shedda looking worried. “That’s okay Jynx, not everyone likes being on ships. We all like different things. And you wouldn’t know you don’t like ships if you hadn’t come to Manhattan.” The little boy nodded, “But I like my friends! And they are all here, so that makes it fun.”

As they chatted, Koro pulled away from Shedda’s side, listening to the others intently.

“Kowo? You like bwocks? We got new bwoks,” Imma was the youngest. She pointed across the room, where there were indeed blocks, lifesize fake brick blocks. Enough to build a child size fort or two.

Shedda

His eyes lit up and he grinned. “I love to build! We could build something big. Come on,” he said, pushing himself to his feet.

Koro took the most efficient and easy way down via the slide and ran for the pile of blocks but he waited for Imma to join him before he started building. “Imma? What you want to build?”

~Koro

Imma paused. “I like to stack them as tall as I can and watch them fall over.” Then she ran the rest of the way over. “I want to build a fort, but I don’t know how.”

Imma

“I think I know,” Koro said. “I build with smaller blocks and make walls. We can do that with these big blocks!” He grabbed one and set it next to another in a line. “We go till the corner then turn. Help me?” he asked, he warm brown eyes full of excitement. The blocks weren’t too heavy but he had little arms and they took some maneuvering.

~Koro

Imma nodded and began lining them up in one big long line. Soon the other children had gathered around and were helping. Byrle helped Koro show Imma how to turn the blocks and create the outline. The children worked for almost an hour building and playing and knocking things down just to build it all over again. Imma followed Koro around copying whatever he was doing.

Shedda

Koro was utterly absorbed in playing with the other children, but every now again again he’d run over to Shedda excited about this or that. After awhile though, he bounded over with a bit less energy and leaned against her. “Shedda, I’m hungry.”
