His little face lit up and he pointed to the one that was awash with a gradient of colour. “That one! Can we get that one, Shedda?” he asked, positively vibrating with excitement.

Shedda smiled, “Yes we can. Here…” There were three different ones. Different thicknesses, materials, and hems. She had to computer replicate all three. “Pick the one you like and we will the computer take the other two back.”
Shedda
Koro reached out and touched all three, taking his time with this very important task. After all, the blanket had to feel nice. His little face became set up as he concentrated until he put both his hands on the one blanket that was super soft but of a medium weight and had a plain edge. “This one, Shedda. I think Mirane will like this one.” He broke into a gin, seeming very pleased with himself.

Shedda let him take his time as he chose. She wanted him to be sure it was what he wanted and know it was his gift and his idea. When he finally selected it she grinned, “I think that is perfect, Koro. Mirane will be nice and warm and comfortable with this one.” Shedda returned the other two and then helped him pick out a box to wrap it in.
He selected a dark blue box.
When they were done she helped him off the stool. “Alright Koro, now, I have a surprise for you. Are you ready?”
Shedda
“A surprise? I’m ready!” he said, bouncing on his toes. He all but bounced out of the room, pausing long enough for the door sensor to actual register his presence.

Shedda tucked the box under her arm and hurried to catch up with him. They took a lift to deck 10 where the educational facilities for the younger children were located. They walked along, chatting back and forth, Shedda refusing to give away the surprise - no matter how tricky Koro’s questions were. They turned and entered a large cargobay-esque door.
Inside was a huge play ground. Climbing walls, slides, swings, forts, climbing nets and ropes, sand boxes, climbing domes, old fashioned peddle cars, balls and nets, and bats, and large storage cabinets full of other things. And at least a dozen or two of other children, all about or near Koro’s age.

Koro let out a gasp followed by a squeal and ran into the middle of the room. He’d been in the childcare centre for an evening but he hadn’t spent a full day there yet and hadn’t yet seen this place. His brown eyes were wide as he immediately dashed for one of the forts with a net going up one side and began the tricky navigation up.
Shedda marked a storage cubby along the wall with Koro’s name and slid the box into it and then followed him partially across the area. She pulled the PaDD out of her pocket and set it to record to capture Koro’s antics for Sair. Shedda bit her tongue once as his foot got tangled, trying not to correct him and let him find his way up. She wasn’t worried he would fall, the distance wasn’t far and the deck plating had been covered in absorbent safety matts. But, as her father told her, you didn’t learn if you didn’t try.
He struggled a little, never having crawled up a net before but soon he made it to the top. “Look Shedda, I’m tall!”
~Koro
Shedda laughed, “You are tall. I bet you can see the whole ship from up there.” Shedda watched as several children raced across bridges and nets, and climbed up to the fort to swarm around the newest potential playmate.

Koro retreated as the sudden wall of faces and noise became directed at him. He ducked against the pillar of the fort, trying to hide a little, though he was still visible.

Shedda walked over and showing off just a little to get the kids attention, she jumped slightly to grab a bar at the top of the fort and pulled herself up with just her arms. All the children knew her because she made it a point for everyone on the ship to know who she was. Especially the children. “Shedda!” and she was inundated with hugs and questions and stories about toys and friends and school. She sat crossed-legged on the platform and held a hand out to Koro to come join her and let him sit right next to her.
When the excitement died down she smiled, “I would like you all to meet my friend. This is Koro, and he’s new to the Manhattan. Koro this is Jynx, Caleb, Pl’kta, Byrle, and Imma.” They all waved at him, “Hi Koro.”
“I’m new too. I just came with my dad,” Byrle said, “My mom had to stay on our last ship. I really miss her.”
