“That works for me,” Sair said with a smile before scooping up the last of her yualra. “I’m sure he will enjoy his time.” But Sair knew also that it was good practice for Shedda while she awaited things to unfold with her adoption. She watched as Koro went back to building things with his blocks and knew it would be good for him to bond with other people as well.

Shedda grinned, “I hope so. Have they issued him a civilian combadge yet? Or do you think he is too young?” Shedda was looking forward to it. She often includes the school rooms and nurseries in her rounds. She thought it was important that even the youngest on board could recognize her and not be too timid to ask for help.

The hesitation played across her face. “He’s only three. Maybe in a few years but I think he’s too young just yet,” Sair said. “I do want to teach him how and where to go for help in an emergency though.”

“A combadge is a big responsibility, and that is your call as to when. I was asking because I was thinking about showing him how to access the computer for help. He won’t need a badge, his bio readings are in the computer. That way he doesn’t have to worry so much about how big the ship is. Then maybe you can meet us in the officer’s mess for lunch.”

Sair beamed. ” That sounds great.”

“How are you with food or drinks with a mild spice?” Kel asked.

“Hmmm. Our neighbors was Bajoran and always made hasperat, which is a very spicy and flavor rich dish, for special occasions. He and Ch’otok, he was Klingon but his wife was Bajoran, had a bit of a rivalry going about their seperate recipes. I am considered quite the light weight when it comes to spice. My father always laughed over my expressions. I could only eat a little. But I am willing to try anything.” The memories made Shedda smile and long for home.

Sair laughed lightly. “Alright, I think you’ll enjoy a drink we’re used to having after a meal. It’s called ekal and it’s made from the same nuts that were sprinkled on the yualra. It’s spiced with a particular seed that has flavour and a mild heat. The whole thing has a delicate richness to it, so it’s quite nice on its own as an after meal treat.”

“It’s not something we have every evening, but it’s a staple in our and many other Kobliad homes,” Kell added.

“Oh those nuts were delicious. I’m excited to try the ekal.” Shedda had strong preferences about what she liked and disliked in food, but as a cultural experience she was always excited to try new things.

“Oh good! It’s one of the few things I can make myself from scratch,” Sair said with a smirk as she looked at her mother. “Though you make it better than I do.”

Kel shrugged. “It’s good practice for you.”

Sair let out a feigned and long suffering sigh, muttering something about medical school. “Do you have nything you especially like to make, Shedda?” she asked.

“I am really not much of a cook.” In truth Shedda could get by but a prepared fancy meal was not in her skill set. She probably could but had never had the desire to learn more than basics. “We lived very simply at home. Field to table really. We didn’t have the energy generators or means for replicators. My father grew a lot, but my favorite was Robola. It cooks well no matter how you prepare it or can be sliced and eaten raw. It’s a very crisp texture with a smooth light flavor. I was thinking of asking him to bring some to add to the garden beds.”
