Sair turned to her mother. “I’ve had a version of this before. It’s not unlike sisej but with marine crustaceans and a creamier soup base.” She was glad for the shift in conversation since her and her mother agreed to avoid a particular topic. There would be time for it, but not now.
Kel nodded with understanding. “This looks lovely.”
Sair took some of the bread, tore off a piece and dipped it into the creamy dish before popping it into her mouth. It was warm and luscious and salty. “Mmmm, it’s a very comforting thing, isn’t it. That and some sort of fresh bread is something I think many, many cultures have.”
Dipping her spoon into the chowder, Kel took a generous bite and looked momentarily startled but not in an unpleasant way. She pause, her already ridged forehead furrowing deeper. “Huh. I’m not sure how to describe it, but I do like it. I agree that it has some similarities to something back home though.”
The counsellor grinned and looked at Alex. “I’ve spoken with one of my Federation contacts who is in the exchange program and stationed in our capital and we’re scheming to collect the chemical compositions of a bunch of Kobliad dishes. With any luck I’ll be able to put on a proper Kobliad feast.”

Alex smiled as he took a bite and chewed. He swallowed and said “You should speak to Chef Harv. He has a knack for puzzling out flavors and textures to duplicate various culture’s cuisine. His is a rare talent, and I’m sure he’d be happy to assist you in finding something close to your native food.” He then chuckled and said “He’s also what I like to call ‘particular’, so expect some… eccentricities.”

“Consider me warned,” Sair said, still smiling before she delved into her chowder, taking a few simple moments to truly enjoy it. There was a silky texture that slid over her tongue and the saltiness of the seafood appealed to her. That and the bread seemed to cut the richness a bit as well.
Meanwhile, Kel couldn’t help but chuckle. “I’m trying to picture you cooking, but I can’t quite see it.”
Sair gave her mother a lopsided grin. “I know, right. And though I am slightly better than I used to be but I’m not sure Harv would let me near his kitchen under those circumstances. But now I have a replicator, and no kitchen. Not a lot of coking opportunities outside of the holodeck.”

“Yes… I wonder why Star Fleet doesn’t equip every cabin with a kitchen?” Alex said sarcastically. “I mean really… lots of heat and liquids and oils and smoke in an enclosed space with highly flammable gases… what could possibly go wrong?” and he laughed.”Although I bet if you found the right bottle of booze, the Chief Engineer would build you a cook top. But don’t tell him I said that.” and Alex thought for moment. “Or let him do it.” and he laughed again.

Sair laughed. “I wouldn’t mind learning more, actually. I have rudimentary skills but honestly life as a doctor never gave me much time for cooking. On my days off I just wanted to rest. Which is why my mother can tease me because she isn’t all that much better. She’s just had more lessons from my father, who actually can cook.”
“I do enjoy eating nice food though,” Kel said with a smile. “I wouldn’t say the cuisines of our world are exceptionally inventive, but but they aren’t entirely boring either.”

“I really like to cook.” Cochrane said. “My mother is an amazing cook, and she and my twin sister would always experiment in the kitchen. Most of the time it turned out amazing. But when it didn’t…” and he shuddered and then laughed.
