Sair smiled warmly. “That there is.”

Kel set her fork down for a moment and inhaled audibly. “She’s right,” she said, looking over at her daughter. “We’re missing an opportunity here to record these changes as they are happening. I mean, yes there was that one documentarian who did that piece as you were working on the cure, but a lot has changed, even in just the last few years. It would be a hard process, but maybe it’s necessary.”

She looked at Shedda. “Our people struggle with the hows and whys of our condition because while we did not do it to ourselves, we caused another people terrible harm and they took an unfathomable step. And we accepted our punishment. Those same people we harmed are the ones that helped us find a cure. Our shame is long-lived, Shedda, and ingrained into our society. It’s hard to let go of.”

“We did nothing, but carve a different fate,” Sair said, stabbing her fork into the layers of her food. “Those actions were generations ago. The Amrayans might not ever be friendly with us, but they aren’t exactly our enemy anymore either.” She understood people’s reluctance to talk about the war the Kobliads started, and the outcome. But Sair was tired of living in the past. It was why a part of why she had to leave.

Shedda refrained from saying anything for the moment. She met each woman’s gaze as they spoke, but she could have no way to knowing what they were experiencing as individuals or representatives of their species. She ate quietly while they spoke and when her plate was empty she wiped her mouth with a napkin and cleared her pallett with the juice. “You know, this reminds me of something I read. It happened on the Enterprise, during her hayday of Cpt Picard. The encountered an alien probe from a planet named Kataan. It is long go now and so were the people. The probe immersed Picard in a what we call an ‘ancestor simulation.’ In minutes he’d lived the life of a Kataanian and knew their history and what had happened to them and why. They knew they were dying and wanted some piece of themselves to be remembered. Your planet and people are not dying any longer, but it is a part of your present that is dying and being regulated to your history.” She smiled at Sair and Kel gently. “Such an intensive immersive experience may not be the exact answer, but the Katannians didn’t create the life of a leader or mythic figure, but an every day person and what they experienced. Journals, photographs, documentaries, time capsules are all ways that anyone can help share. It’s okay if it’s not all happy.”

Sair nodded. “What you say makes a lot of sense, actually.” For her part, Kel was suddenly lost in thought.

Shedda looked at Koro and leaned toward him a bit. “What do you say Koro? Do you remember where you lived with your mom and grandmother before? What did you like best?”

Koro’s brown eyes studied Shedda rather seriously for a moment until he broke into a grin. “The park!”

“He’s referring to a large green space near our apartment. We took him out there daily unless the weather was really terrible,” Kel said. “But Sair introduced us to the garden on Deck Four and he seems to really enjoy it there too.”

Shedda smiled, “What was so wonderful about the park? Can you tell me all about it? What did you do there?”

His little face screwed up in thought as he tried to find the right words but ended up going with his native tongue. “The big tree with all the birds. They make big noises. Sqwak, sqwak, sqwak.” Sair had to fight to keep from laughing aloud as Koro continued. “And the pond! It has ducks.”

Shedda grinned broadly, her eyes dancing. “Do you think you could draw me a picture tomorrow? I would love to see what the birds and tree look like.”

“What was the worst?” and she made a comical little screwed up face expressing the meaning through her body language and words.

“Mama gone,” Koro said softly.

Sair was instantly struck with intense emotion and she leaned over to kiss the top of her his head. “My too, baby, me too.” She had been doing her best to make the right decisions for them both, but there had come a point where both their needs were at odds and while her decision to leave Kobliad had been for both their benefits, Sair was all too aware that there had been consequences for them both by choosing to go ahead alone and settle into her role before she brought him over. “It definitely makes being together now so much sweeter though,” she said, allowing a smile to creep back onto her face.

Shedda smiled gently at him. “That is really sad. Your mama is a very special person, isn’t she? But now you are together in a new home.” For as long as Sair wanted anyway.

“What was your least favorite thing to do then? Why didn’t you like it?” Again she spoke clearly and carefully. Koro was bright but she didn’t want to confuse him with all the new words.

The little boy looked rather miffed as he gazed at Shedda very seriously and said, “Pick up my toys. I rather play.”

“We’re working on it,” Kel said, chuckling softly.

“Oh I would rather play too! It’s no fun when we have to stop.” She dropped her voice to a stage whisper and looked at him seriously, “My father made me pick up my toys too. We would play a game to race and see who could pick up more toys. He is a BIG guy with even bigger hands, so he could pick up big toys with one hand. Those big toys only counted as one though. I was small and could reach things in small places so I always got more toys and would win. I bet if you work hard at it, you could win that race too.”

“What do you think of this ship? Do you like it? Do you hate it?”
