Shedda smiled and nodded at the little boy, “Very good. Linguist,” she repeated again one more time, clearly for him. She glanced around at the few toys and bins. “You have lots of toys, Koro. Which one is your favorite?”

Koro gave a tiny grin and hopped off the sofa, moving towards a group of building blocks that had trickled their way under the coffee table. “Blocks!”

Shedda couldn’t help the grin on her face as Koro grinned at her and announced his prized possession. “Those are very fine blocks. What will you build with something so wonderful?”

The boy plopped himself down on the floor and began staking the colourful block on top of each other. “I build a big tower!” he said in Konliad, clearly more wordy in his native tongue.

“My mother will be back in a minute. But anything you feel like eating, or conversely, anything you can’t eat? I do aim to not poison my dinner guests,” Songz said with a smirk.

Shedda laughed, a low rich sound and her eyes danced. She stood to look at Sair, “I am so sorry.” She took a deep breath to calm the amusement. “Being asked is so refreshing. The cook in the mess is such a tyrant. You get whatever he ‘knows’ you want. It’s scary how accurate he is. I have never seen him be wrong, but I will never, ever admit that to him. So don’t say anything.” Shedda grinned like she might like annoying the man. “But to answer your question, I have no allergies, and I love trying new foods. So whatever you are making, I am sure I will enjoy.”

Shedda

Sair grinned. “Making is a strong word for the replicator cooking dinner, but we’ll go with it. Today was a lot and I think comfort food is on the agenda,” she said as she moved over to the replicator.

The door slid open and another Kobliad walked in. Shorter than Sair, she was older with dark auburn hair, similarly narrow eyes and the same mouth and cheekbones. She was trim and looked exceptionally fit. Taking in Shedda, the woman gave a light smile. “Hello, you must be Commander Mal’athar,” she said, bowing her head. “I’m Kel, Sair’s mother.”

Shedda bowed forward slightly from the waist, “It is my pleasure to meet you, Kel.” Shedda stood back straight and then offered her hand. “Please call me, Shedda. Thank you for having me this evening.” Her words encompassing both women. “What do you make of your trip so far, Kel?”

Shedda

Kel reached out and shook the XO’s hand, though she gave Sair a quick look to confirm and Sair nodded. “It’s been rather extraordinary all told. I find myself learning a lot. Life in space is a lot to digest.”

“It is that. I’m not sure even the space boomers of the 22nd century could really digest it all. I think that is what I like most about space. It is so vast that even in routine things there is still a lot to learn.”

Shedda

At the replicator, Sair watched a large covered dish materialize and carefully brought it over to the table. “Kobliads used to be explorers, a long time ago. I think given enough time, we’ll be more inclined to do so again.”

Kel seemed less convinced, but she said nothing. “Can I help?”

“I thought we could introduce Shedda to yualra. Did you want to replicate some bread?” Sair said

“That I can do,” Kel said, moving over.

“Koro, go wash your hands and come for dinner,” Sair said and then gestured to the table. “Come on Shedda, have a seat.” Koro all but jumped off the floor and raced to the ‘fresher making Sair chuckle. “I wish I could collect that energy some days. I could use some of it,” she added with a sigh. “oh, and Shedda can I get you anything to drink?” she asked. She was tempted towards a bit of alcohol tonight after their marathon performance review day.
