The boy was intensely curious, studying not just the words Cochrane used, but each thing he learned the word for. But after a little bit, he lost focus and started poking the stick in the water, fascinated by the ripples he was creating. Su’ree…” he said, the word translating to something akin to ‘pretty’.

Koro peered deeper into the water, leaning over, balancing on the edge as he studied his reflection. The toddler grinned and starting giggling when he saw himself grinning.

Cochrane moved ose to the boy, smiling as he giggled. He reached forward and pulled the child back from the edge slightly and said “Not too close. This sint the swimming pool. That’s what the holodeck is for.” and he grinned.

“Splash water!” Koro said, just as his mother and grandmother were walking back that way, Sair’s arm looped through her mother’s. Sair watched with quiet amusement as she knew all too well what a curious and persistent child she had. “Are you trying to get the captain into trouble, little man? Hmm?” Sair said, smirking.

Cochrane looked their way and smiled. “Oh, I don’t need any assistance in that particular department.” and he laughed.

Sair laughed. “Huh, that sounds like stories worth sharing.”

Kel was more reserved but the tension seemed to have dissipated from the older woman. “I honestly pity whomever is doing childcare. They are going to have their hands full. ” Was that a concession on the fact that she would be leaving soon? Perhaps.

“I don’t know about that, Madame.” Cochrane said easily with a knowing grin. “Mrs. Ferragut is the head of our childcare facility. She is… most unique… in her capacity to deal with children. A finer early childhood educator I have never seen.”

“I have no doubt,” Kel said with a small smile as she moved back to the picnic.

Sair gave Alex a look that was something not quite exasperated but definitely in the realm of ‘Give me Strength’. It wasn’t that her mother was being difficult, but their quick conversation was more or less ‘We’ll talk more about it later and can we just have a nice time?’ and Sair was confident things were okay right now. Later though… well, her and her mother had some things to work out, clearly. But it was not fair to anyone to do that now.

“Are you going to play?” Kel said, her face brightening with hope.

Sair scooped up Koro and brought him back to the picnic and she eyed the case. “I’m so out of practice,” she said with a frown before looking at Alex. “There is very real risk that I will harm your musical sensibilities.”

“Hush, don’t listen to her, Captain. Her father is a renowned prizar musician on our world and Sair has been laying since she was Koro’s age.”

“Duration does not indicate current skill,” Sair replied.
