Cochrane laughed at the mention of McKenzie. “You know, I don’t know if she would appreciate it or not. I hope she would… anyway to keep shots from being fired is a good way in my book.” He then thought for a moment and then said “Start with what you are most familiar with first. Learnhow to learn about your opponents. Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians… even Orion pirates… once you have a process for analyzing the ones you know about, move a little further afield. And once you are comfortable there, we can work on the Delta Quadrant together. As you progress in your studies, I’ll work some specific ships into the sims. We can see how you are at recognition and ‘negotiation’.” and he chuckled.Cochrane, CO
“I think Mrs McKenzie would agree whole heartedly with you. I think she would appreciate out thinking someone to weapons.” Shedda’s face darkened slightly at the mention of Orion pirates. She wasn’t angry just dark memories. She thought about it. Who was she most familiar with. “I think I’ll start with Ferengi and Cardassians. The Dark Sea and Santiago operated in those areas. I’ll pull up mission logs from when we encountered them, and start there.” She glanced around the simulation. “Tomorrow?”
Mal’athar, XO
“Tomorrow. And… find someone else to accompany you. Let me know who it is before the sim. I want to see how you handle directing real crew in a combat situation.” Cochrane said. He stood up and said “Just want to get a baseline. And it will be good training for anyone on the ship really. Your pick, doesn’t matter to me who it is.”
Cochrane, CO
Shedda nodded, she would give it some thought. “I will let you know who.” Shedda had someone in mind already. Alex said it would be good training for anyone. She left the holodeck but it was a couple of hours before she was able to stop by Sair’s office. She rang the chime on the door.
Mal’athar, XO
“Come in,” Sair said.
Shedda entered hearing the summons her gaze scanning the room and falling on Sair at her desk.
The Kobliad was working at her desk, a pile of PaDDs slowly working their way from the left side to the right. She looked up to see Shedda and smiled. “Commander, lovely to see you. What can I do for you?”

Shedda made her way over and sat down. “Well, I have a…” What was it? A favor, a proposition, a plea? “Let me start at the beginning. I asked, perhaps foolishly and unaware of what I was getting myself in to, Cpt Cochrane to give me some extra tactical training. I have been instructed to bring someone with me tomorrow. He said it would be beneficial for anyone who attends. I thought you might like the opportunity to spread yourself a little?”
Mal’athar, XO
Sair was both intrigued and surprised at the request and it showed on her face as set aside one of the PaDDs and gave the XO her full attention. “Tactical training? Are you sure you want a civilian there for that? Wouldn’t I be a liability?” she said, being at least honest about her concerns. The basics she had done in her training on Earth had been just that: basic. Exceptionally. Just enough for her to know to back up and let others with the better training and experience do what they needed to. Give her a person with sudden cardiac arrest and she could leap into action without a second thought, but this was no just out of her comfort zone, it was… what? What was it? It was like she was playing at being Starfleet. And she never wanted to cause any disrespect to the officers and crew that had done the work and years of training to do what they did best.

Shedda shook her head, “It’s training, and I’m more likely to make a wrong decision and be the liability. Sair, you are part of the senior staff, civilian or not and the crew will look to you for guidance. An understanding of the Manhattan’s tactical protocols and protocols in general will make you more informed and able to assist the crew regardless. Sometimes stepping way out of our comfort zone can provide perspective as well.”
Mal’athar, XO
Mal’athar was asking something of Sair in this moment that she wasn’t sure she had been before: to do more, be more. It wasn’t that Songz hadn’t strived, she had. But it had been within specific contexts. Become a doctor and work her way up. Retrain and delve into healing minds too. This though wasn’t any of that. And it wasn’t that Sair wasn’t capable of doing more, it was that she had already given so much of herself along the way that she hadn’t been sure there was anything more to give. But this wasn’t about her chosen profession, or being a mother. This was something entirely different. “Alright,” she said simply, giving a small nod.
