“Fairly well. Koro is only two, so really he doesn’t know the difference all that much, other than we don’t have weather on board outside of the holodeck. But he’s going through a bout of separation anxiety, which is not unexpected given we spent a couple months apart. But having my mother here has been great, though I think she’s starting to get a bit anxious about getting back to Kobliad soon. She won’t tell me that of course, but I know and I think Koro and I will manage on our own.”

“I am glad she’s been able to be here to help you both get settled. Though if you find she’s really struggling to be out here, we can arrange a runabout for her to get back to Event Horizon if she wants to head home early.” Shedda was in no hurry to send the woman away, it was in fact the opposite. If one was not prepared to be in space far away from home, it could be very difficult. She didn’t want Sair’s mother to be miserable and would rather help her.

Pulling up the next personnel file, Sair noted that discipline issues and that it might warrant a more serious conversation with the crewman to see if the Manhattan was really the right place for them. Out here in the Delta Quadrant they didn’t have the same resources and if someone was unhappy here, it made no sense for them to to find a more suitable assignment.

Shedda was equally concerned. “I’ve only been here less than a year, but I’ve noticed that a lot of officers accept the position to come out here, but don’t realize the reality of being so far from home. New species, new space, new discoveries appeal to them, but it’s not like they can just make a subspace call through the worm hole. Oh we can, but the timing and traffic and the distance make a difference. It could also be a matter of personality clash. I’ve seen that happen plenty in my career. If being in the Delta is really what he wants, he is going to have to fix his discipline issues.” Shedda read through the file again. “I can talk to him, but a counseling session might work better. What do you think?”

“Both I think. Having a more professional level discussion about his career satisfaction and goals first and establishing what baseline we’re working with would be useful before I step in to deal with things that trend towards the personal.” Sair bit on her lower lip for a moment. “I’m fine with walking in blind, so to speak, but I think it would be more useful for him to know and understand that it’s reached a level where the first officer needs to intervene and that generally is not a desired thing.”

Shedda nodded, “I agree.” Shedda didn’t have a problem with intervening. It was expected, but she did value the counselor’s opinion. They had a different way of viewing the crew and people than she did as an executive officer. She had when she was 2O of the Dark Sea been wrong about how to approach an officer and should have spoken to the ship’s counselor first. She added the man’s name to her PaDD and made a note to have a conversation with him soon, along with a note on why.

“Have you heard anything about the adoption yet? I sent my report in right away so they should have it.” Songz was actually nervous on Shedda’s behalf. She knew that anticipation of becoming a new parent all too well, and though they had different journeys there she truly wanted this to happen for the XO.

A deep worried sigh escaped her and her shoulder slumped. “No,” accompanied by a shake of her head. “I still call her and send her messages every day, but I haven’t heard anything. I thought perhaps the transmission might have gotten misdirected or lost in the coms traffic, so I contacted the judge just in case. She said she received everything and I’d hear when she had time to review it.” The longer it went though the more convinced Shedda was it wasn’t going to happen.
