Shedda smiled as the comm went blank. Her father had been with Ms Karra that afternoon. A lot was changing at home. She missed it and was impatient to hear back, but impatience wouldn’t make anything go faster. She was awake now, having made sure she had slept before the call so she’d be awake for it. Not for the first time and she was sure not for the last, she wondered if she was making the right choice. It didn’t just affect her but it affected Maava even more. She’d been asked if she was just checking boxes off a list, but she honestly wanted this because of Maava not because she felt she had too.

Shedda found herself wandering the corridors contemplating the situation and best choices and what she should or should not do. She spoke to a few officers and crewman that were out and about working as she wandered. Eventually she found herself in the officer’s mess getting ready to order coffee from the replicator and stopped with a heavy sigh. The man was a tyrant and a pain, but it was his domain, she should at least try not to antagonize him. Pitchers of coffee were still out and she sniffed the decaff, it still smelled like caffeinated, but she poured a cup anyway and tried it again. It was probably the last one made hours ago and was stale. Hopefully it was both late enough and early enough the king was not in his domain yet.

Nope, it was fresh, and it still tasted horrible. It had a too heavy acidic flavor to it. Shedda sighed and resigned herself to giving up her coffee habit. But before giving up she ordered almond milk from the replicator and added it to the cup, perhaps the alkaline in the almonds would balance the coffee…she hoped.

Shedda had taken a habit of sitting in the officer’s mess after talking with Maava. It was usually quiet here at this time of the night. She ended up getting water to drink.
Though she’d quietly, when she thought no one was looking, tried to like the decaf, but she couldn’t. She just didn’t like it. She sat at a table near one of the windows wishing she was rocking Maava to sleep and not Ms Karra. Maava would be one in a couple of months. Shedda didn’t want to miss it. She was staring out at the window when her PaDD beeped. Glancing down, a crease crossed her brow, and she had to take a deep breath. It was from Judge Arroz. The woman handling Maava’s adoption. Shedda opened it and read the message.

Hello Cmdr Mal’athar,

Congratulations on your recent promotion. I am happy to inform you that your secondary background check has come back clear. Everything is in order, except your home evaluation. You’ve moved and so your new quarters must be inspected. The same information will be needed on your ship, and the inspection. Have someone from the counseling staff complete the evaluation and return it as soon as possible.

Judge Arroz.

Shedda let out the breath she had been holding. That was easy. She could get that done in the next couple of days. Tapping the screen a picture of small round face, thick dark hair, and pale green skin filled the screen. A smile crossed Shedda’s face. Soon, not too much longer, she hoped.

Shedda had put the request in for the evaluation, but she also knew it was a bit of a gamble. She figured it would be Sair that came, but there were other officers on board qualified to complete the evaluation. She had also put in the request for the sunlight lamps. The separate office room in her quarters she had turned into a bed room for Maava. Above the crib was one of the sunlight lamps. She hadn’t wanted to make a sun bed for her, she was too little and might turn it on when she shouldn’t. This way Shedda could control it.

The built in books shelves were now faced with plexiglass to prevent Maava from climbing them or pulling down any of the artifacts she had. Her standard issue phaser was in built in locker, part of the blulkhead, in her quarters, and anything small or dangerous was put up out of reach or locked up. Of course she didn’t have to worry about blinds, they were built in, or cooking, the replicator did it all. Maava had a whole trunk of toys that she would bring with her, but Shedda had replicated some anyway and clothes. Just because.

Now she was sitting at her desk, having just compiled the information on the Manhattan that Judge Arroz had asked for and sent it off. She shrugged out of her uniform jacket as she stood up, intending to spend some time under the sunlight lamp.

A little while later, the chime went off. Sair was in her usual ‘uniform’ of black trousers and a pale blue tunic that mimicked the Starfleet medical staff. In her hands she carried a padd and wore an expectant smile on her face. She was happy to do the evaluation, knowing how much Shedda wanted this to all work out. Having had a long and hard to road to becoming a mother herself, Sair was hoping this story had a happy ending.

Shedda blinked behind the eye mask and yawned widely as she sat up. She flipped the sunlight lamp off and removed the mask. She stood up, padding on bare feet into the living space. She pressed the control to open the door as she ordered a glass of decaffeinated coffee from the replicator. She turned surprised to see Sair, but knew instantly why she was there. Or she thought she did. “Counselor Sair, please come in. Can I get you anything?”
