Wedding Bells- An End and a Beginning

“Makes the ships I’ve served on before look like toys,” Faye said with a laugh.

The shuttle slipped into the massive flight bay (not just a shuttlebay, oh no), and their shuttle also looked like a toy compared to the fighters that lined the cavernous space. Calloway’s eyes traced the fighters longingly. “Oh, how I wish I had had one of those when I was fleeing two Romulan warbirds.”

“Templar-class fighters. Newest out of the shipyards on Forzia VII. Notice there is no canopy. Pilot is wholly encased in the center of the ship. They are clausterphobic at first… but a hell of a lot of fun.” Alex said with a grin.

“Flying tanks… cool!”

As Alex touched the shuttle so gently on the deck, Faye felt the anxiety creep in. Yep, she was nervous. They were apparently meeting up with an Admiral, and Faye wasn’t the best when it came to brass. She usually just pissed them off. But that had bene in her pre-Command training. She liked to think she had better control over her mouth these days. Even just a little bit. But their presence here reminded her she was moving to a new ships soon and all the new things that came with it. For the most part she was trying not to think about her background worries and just enjoy the festivities of her and Dag’s wedding but she’d be worse off if she ignored it entirely.

As the runabout powered down, Alex opened the hatch and a Lieutenant in the blue uniform of the Science division looked up from a PaDD, her face almost on fire with excitement. “Lieutenant Commander Calloway? Hello?” and the short but wiry brunette made a bee-line for Faye, completely ignoring Cochrane. “Ma’am? Hi! My name is Lidya Halstead- er, sorry - Lieutenant Halstead. I’m here to take you to the Hub. Commander, I hope its not too forward but I am so excited to meet you. I’ve studied all of your published papers and I read your Academy defense of the continued usefulness of hard-line circuitry inside proto-organic lattices and really that made me want to go into cryptography and I know that you are just gonna really like the Hub and what we have set up here and I can’t wait to show you what we have and get your opinion on a few of the more ‘esoteric’ systems designs we have incorporated into the-” and the young woman rambled on at full speed as Cochrane leaned in and said softly in Faye’s ear “Can you say ‘stalllllkeeeeeer’?” and then laughed softly as the woman kept going, seemingly only seeing Faye in her tunnel vision.

For someone who with self-described social ineptitude, Faye was instantly overwhelmed. Her body had frozen and she had to force herself to breathe. It was way too much. And that wasn’t even considering that the woman liked Faye, or assumed she did. Wow. She cast Alex a ‘Holy hell’ sort of look and stepped forward, right in front of Halstead. She placed her hands on the woman’s shoulders and, in a firm voice, said, “Breath, Lieutenant! Take a deep breath, count to three and breathe again. That’s an order. Because you’re the host and it’s my wedding day and if you faint on me that’ll put a huge damper in the fun, don’cha think?” Calloway dropped her hands and stepped back.

“Great. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let me introduce you to my friend and Commanding Officer, Captain Alex Cochrane. And why don’t you be a dear and show us the way and you can tell me about these modifications. I’ve been told some of comms array work has been used in the Hub and I have to admit I’m curious about the implementation.”

She let Halstead step ahead and leaned in towards Alex. “Okay, best friend and officiant, your task is to keep a healthy personal bubble space between her and I.”
