Alex shrugged and looked at her with that look he gave her when he was trying to make sure she grasped something she might need later on. “Fair doesn’t exist, Commander. There simply ‘is’. Sometimes the ‘is’ is harder on one party than it is on another… but that simply is the way circumstances come to be. If we search for the fairness in everything, we are destined to be sorely disappointed in the universe. So we deal with the ‘is’, and try to ensure that we are doing the best we can for everyone involved.”

“Understatement of my life,” she muttered, rolling her eyes. Faye blew out a breath. “So, more calls, but I got this, Alex. Thanks.” For a moment she just regarded her friend, this unexpected and wholly welcome well of support and understanding. Reaching a hand over, she took his and squeezed it, finding she had said enough already.

He squeezed her hand back and smiled. “I know you do. We wouldn’t be friends if I thought otherwise.” and he winked and stood up. “Tell Pikelsimer I said hello. And tell your mother I said the next time she decides to drop a bomb on my ship I will keel-haul her.” and he laughed and moved to the door. He stopped as it slid open. Turning, he said “I’m really proud of you, Faye.” and he stepped into the hall and was gone.

Faye chuckled to herself and slipped out of the chair, setting Tess on the floor (who mewed in objection). Yes, she was going to put in the calls, but after mucking about in the dirt and having that rather intense conversation Faye knew she needed to ground herself. Sometimes that meant yoga, but right now all she wanted was a sonic shower and to turn her brain off for a short time.

She took a few steps and stopped, frowning. She thought over what Alex had said and the whole conversation with Gavin. His face was etched vividly in her mind. He looks like mom. Why that thought startled her she wasn’t sure but she’d had zero contact with that side of the family. The Conners were all but figments of imagination, the subject of stories and anecdotes, many laced with pain. She thought about her mother and her difficult relationship with them. Gavin’s expression when he realized that Shara was in fact alive told her everything. Well, if her mother wanted that to have gone more smoothly, she should have damn well called him herself, now shouldn’t she have?

With a sigh, Faye headed for the shower.
