“I’m driven, at times to the exclusion of everything but what I am working on. I entered Academy 2 years early. I am told I managed that because I am so bright. I think it’s because I was too stubborn to give up. I love my work in science and learning about other cultures and civilizations. I enjoy mentoring others and how command stretches and challenges me.” Shedda took a deep breath, “And I hate my mother and everything she represents.”

Sair studied Shedda for a moment. “I see. While I have a small familiarity with Orions, I can’t say I am deeply understanding of the culture. What is it that she represents that you hate so much?”

“The first thing you have to understand about Orion society, no matter what the appearance may be, women control everything with $e%. They use their pheromones to control everyone around them. It drives other women to rage and anger, and men to idioticy and controlled only by their base desires. My mother is extremely successful. Powerful even. Women don’t need to use their bodies, or in this case, their pheromones to be successful, and my mother perpetuates this myth to keep herself in power and to make slaves of other women and men. It’s disgusting.”

“So is this rejection just of that power play behaviour, or the whole thing? Where do you draw the line?” Sair asked. A lot of this first part of their conversation would be about understanding not just Shedda as a person but the person who was the Executive Officer of this ship.

Shedda paused considering the question. “The whole thing? As in all of Orion culture? I have met good, honest, honorable Orions, and I’ve met some that are despicable and of the same ilk as my mother. There is Orion culture and then the culture of the Syndicates. They are not the same. I do not know enough about Orion culture to form an opinion, I did not grow up with it. I know enough of syndicate culture to know that I will never condone or accept it. Or the whole thing as in my mother? I do not know if I can ever accept her. Not the way she would want. I do not think we could ever come to a compromise.”

While Sair didn’t have personal knowledge of the syndicate, there were many Kobliads who had had their fair share of run-ins, usually if they were trying to get dueridium from less than reputable sources. “Why join Starfleet specifically? By the sounds of it, you could have gone in many directions, but you chose this one? Why?”

Shedda smirked, “Not so many opportunities where I grew up. I wanted to do something that brought be people together in a positive way, and despite the problems in any military institution Star Fleet does good work. And I love archeology and there was the Daystrom institute I guess, but Star Fleet would let me pursue that interest while helping others in an above board way. What’s found is shared with everyone, not sold to the highest bidder or to which ever private interest group can provide the most favors or prestige.”
